Rock 93.3

Area 845

Has arrived...commercial free through the weekend they are saying!

Looks like "Star 93.3" is pulling the plug on Hot AC to go a classic rock station, and they are going to compete with the other rock stations including WPDH, WRRV, WDST and WBPM. We have 4 rock stations, why do we need another one? This is like the return of the old "Z-Rock" from the 90's. We had enough rock stations on these 5 frequencies, this is a waste of space! Which one of these stations are changing formats. Maybe WBPM should move the call letters back to 94.3 and bring back Top 40/CHR and the return of "B94", or maybe WBPM would go to a direction that it will be an "Greatest Hits" type format like CBS-FM does playing 60's, 70's and 80's stuff without the rock and going to compete with "Fox Oldies". Right now, as I said, 4 rock stations is enough, why do we need a fifth one? You'll be the judge!

WPDH, WDST, WRRV and WBPM, it's time for war!

What's going to happen to Hot AC after "Star 93.3" pulled the plug today? I hope they lose many of its listeners to WCTW'S "The Cat". I guess 98.5 "The Cat" would be a great station after the loss of "Star 93.3" earlier today. I guess the Joker got 'em and Batman will never stop him in front of the Cheap Channel headquarters.

If you want a better station than "Star 93.3", try WCTW's "The Cat" at 98.5 or WCZX's "Mix 97.7". Make your pick.

Looks like Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" was the first song played at about 5:10pm Wed. 3/14/12 (according to yes.com; waiting for Mediabase.com to show the 3/14/12 listings so I can confirm).
Last song before switch was Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera's "Moves Like Jagger".

Looks like a mid-1970s to late 1980s (emphasis on the '80s) classic rocker that's leans "hit driven". One or two 1990s tracks slipped through.

Very narrow focus artist-wise - even song wise there's been a few repeats. It seems like it's someone's 250-300 song ipod on repeat/shuffle.

Thanks for the info. I checked yes.com this morning and I searched "WCTW" and I found nothing. "The Cat" also played "Moves Like Jagger", but it doesn't flipped format, but it still continues with the Hot AC format. As I said, if anyone who was former "Star 93.3" listeners, it will end up on "The Cat".

For the record: checked Mediabase for 3/14/12 and after "Moves Like Jagger" at 4:55pm came "The Bitch Is Back" by Elton John (1974) at 4:59pm followed by "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister (1984) at 5:03pm followed by the Aerosmith song at 5:06pm.

Fairly accurate: Mediabase.com songs played list (only shows the current day plus the previous day) -
link: http://www.mediabase.com/whatsong/whatsong.asp?var_s=087066087090045070077

Not as accurate: Yes.com songs played list (shows up to the past 7 days): http://www.yes.com/#WBWZ
Note that as of this posting that Yes.com has not adjusted its "clock" for Daylight Saving Time yet; listed "play time" is one hour behind the actual play time.
*Turns out it may be that WBWZ hasn't adjusted its time for Yes.com (or vice versa); other stations I checked seem to have the correct time. Not sure how it works.*

Some initial observations...

The music mix sounds like PDH in 1988. A few 80's songs that deserve more airplay than they've gotten lately, but far too many of the same old fried-out Classic Rock songs. Gosh, George Thorogood on the radio again? Pinch me. Ted Nugent? Give it a rest already.

Personality? I haven't heard any. The promos poke fun at the horrible Mark Cooper, but are poorly executed. They should have said "We'll give you more music in the morning, and none of this: BLAP BLAP BLAP!" Instead it just has Coopish blathering with no real context. This also means they didn't sign up a kick-a$$ morning show to compete with. The only way Rock 93.3 finds an audience with this music is with better personalities than PDH. So far they're promoting themselves as the "more music" station. That's a recipe for failure.

It sounds like an internet radio station. That won't do squat. People looking for an alternative to Coop in the morning want personality, info and fun, not more of the same old tired music. Going jockless or voice-tracking the rest of the day by people who couldn't find Poughkeepsie with a map can't compete with PDH's jocks. Robin Taylor is an institution. Boris and Tigman blow a jockless Rock 93.3 away.

Imaging? Classic Rock's Next Generation? Huh? The term Classic Rock should be nowhere near this station. It's toxic. It's the new Oldies. It also means nothing because it's pretty much the same music we've been hearing for years on PDH. There's no Wow Factor listening to this station.

There's no compelling reason to choose Rock 93.3 over PDH. It's a missed opportunity. I think the guys at Cumulus actually just breathed a big sigh of relief.

And let's not forget WBPM, that is right next to the dial where "Rock 93.3" should be. Randy Turner (or call it Randy Turnip) shouldn't be happy with this one. "Rock 93.3" is almost like WPDH and WBPM combined. WPDH has been a rock station for over 35 years since it went on back in 1976, and then WBPM came on 5 years ago back in 2007 after Pamal took over from Cheap Channel dumping the oldies for good and came back 4 years later as "Fox Oldies" at 98.9 which is not CC's, and now, this. I guess this station would be the WPDH and WBPM's of 2012.

Remember back in New York City since 2008 where all three of the rock stations like WXRK, WAXQ and WRXP are the three rock stations are in the city, but now, in the Hudson Valley area, we got WPDH, WBPM and now WBWZ. This is a waste of time.

I know a lot of listeners who missed the Hot AC of "Star 93.3" yesterday, some listeners would ended up on "The Cat" at 98.5 which is WCTW in Catskill, but that station can't reached Poughkeepsie as "Roger" mentioned, WCTW is unlistenable in Poughkeepsie and it doesn't have a stream still to listen to. Too bad, "The Cat" doesn't get an online stream. If you want a better Hot AC station than "Star 93.3", go down to New York City and listen to WPLJ or listen to "Mix 97.7" to hear some good music. These two are way better than the loss of "Star 93.3". As you know, WCZX and WPLJ are both Cumulus' owned stations. Bar none.

I hope "Rock 93.3" will down the toilet once if the Spring book comes out. That never happen until maybe this Summer. Cumulus' WPDH is doing well, and Pamal's WBPM is doing okay, but not all that great. I hope "Rock 93.3" will go way down in history as one of the newest station that doesn't care about it.

I have an aircheck of the first day of "Rock 93.3" from last night, but I'll have to post it soon.

If you haven't heard this one yet, guess what! I have an aircheck of the first day of "Rock 93.3" from Wednesday night. I wasn't able to record that aircheck of the format flip, because I was coming home from work when it happened since 4:00 PM after I left to go home. I missed that one so bad. And now, I'm going to bring you the first 104 minutes of "Rock 93.3" first day from Wednesday night. Enjoy!
