Rock 99 Birmingham now Top 40 99.5 The Vibe

It is unfortunate that Rock 99 is no more, but the numbers just weren't there, and they haven't been for quite a while. Cumulus has probably given this some thought and believes that it can take on The Q. They have good reason to think that, too, because The Q isn't that good of a station. They sounded better around 5 years ago, but lately they've slipped.

I agree, they do. It will be interesting to see if The Vibe can maintain this momentum as time goes on.

Nine days later...

The Vibe continues to sound good, in my opinion. As a new CHR, they are being smart with how they're doing their playlist at first. Mediabase shows that they have only played 78 titles in the past 7 days, and their 10 most played titles have all received 100 or more spins each. I've noticed in the past couple of days that they're slowly starting to expand their playlist, but no titles older than 2008 have been spun and the clock has also been set up very well so that their power hits are evenly spaced. It builds listener expectation that if a major CHR hit isn't playing right now, then one is coming up next.

The processing has been modified and has a fuller sound -- but don't be afraid to drive it a little harder, guys!

The artist shouts in their jingles are cool. You'll hear an artist ("Hey, this is Katy Perry") followed by The Vibe jingle, into a Katy Perry song, for example. That's a nice touch. This type of imaging is pretty standard for a lot of CHR stations but it sounds fresh in Birmingham because no one else is doing it. And the thing is, it doesn't take a lot of effort! I love The Q but Vibe's imaging definitely sounds better than "Three things I can't live without are my designer bags, my man and my Q."

So the playlist is there, the imaging is there, the presentation is being refined. From here, I think the longevity of the station all hinges on the people they put in place and how well it's promoted.

Wait… isn't all this controlled by computers? Why wouldn't it sound good? ;)

You would think that, but believe me there are many stations that are computer automated and still can't get the basics right that the computers are supposed to do for you!

Has anyone else noticed a weaker signal from The Vibe lately? I can't pick it up at all in Anniston and on a trip to Birmingham yesterday I had static until I got into the Birmingham city limits. I'm getting this on multiple radios and wondering if perhaps they're on a backup transmitter at the moment.

Has anyone noticed 103.7 the Q is going ala WZYP and being heavy on recurrents, albeit rythmic?

I haven't been in listening range to check it out yet but if they are playing more recurrents that's a mistake. The last thing they should do is have an obvious noticable reaction to the new station comming to town and start changing things. They are still the #1 CHR in town so they should keep doing what they do and make the new game in town be the ones to chase them and earn the listeners.

I've noticed that, too....and I agree, it is the last thing they should be doing. However, The Q PD has a history of overreacting, so it doesn't really surprise me. Still curious as to how long The Vibe will be running in Robojock mode, though. That being said, they're still sounding really good.

I don't know Keith Allen personally, but I'd love for him to "react" by taking Ryan Seacrest off afternoons. I don't see why Keith doesn't want p.m. drive himself, and if he's a forum member perhaps he can respond. I used to listen to Keith when he did afternoons at Island 106 in Panama City. He was excellent.
