"Rock" and roll over at WFPG

Did anyone notice the quiet name change at 96.9 WFPG? I checked my app this morning and the station is now going by the name "Lite 96.9 WFPG." Not a total surprise IMO, but thought I should put the change out there.

What did they go by before the change?

They were "Lite Rock 96.9". Now if you go to literock969.com it redirects to wfpg.com.

Did they change the music at all? I suppose "Lite Rock" is a bit nonsensical when one considers what the format actually consists of. After all, Lady Gaga, Adele, and Pharrell Williams aren't exactly Rock acts.

What's interesting... they were playing Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" around 5pm yesterday. The playlist almost mirrors WOBM, their sister station to the north.

Weird choice. That song is definitely more "Rock" than it is "Lite." Also, that's a Classic Hits song at this point; not really Adult Contemporary--which I assume is how Lite 96.9 classifies itself. (In Philly, that song may be heard on WOGL but I'd be hella surprised to hear it coming from B101.)

Heard that exact song as recently as two years ago on B101. Happen to remember being in a doctors office and passing time just listening to the music…and darned if that wasn’t there. Maybe not today, but at the least it wasn’t long ago. Still lots of overlap in the 80s.

While I don't have any access to actual station research, I can't say I'm surprised myself. Women in their 30s-40s definitely go wild over that Def Leppard song. It *is* pretty amusing considering it's the antithesis of what AC would have played back when that song was new, but times change, and that song honestly is pretty tame by today's standards.

Of course, this all just goes to show that "lite", "lite rock", "soft rock", and the like are really not accurate descriptors for the format anymore. (Other common slogans like "the variety station", "'80s to now", or "today hits and yesterday's favorites" make more sense.) But the target audience still seems to perceive the stations that way and react positively to the branding, so it sticks around.

This is totally off topic, but have y'all had a chance to listen to any tracks from Def Leppard's new album "Diamond Star Halos?" Most of it is on YouTube, and I'm super-pumped about what I've heard so far!
