Rock Mornings

So with Stern gone, DLR gone, Mancow dying, Bob and Tom aging, Rover failing......

Given all that....is it now a real viable option to try local mornings....or is it worth the efforts?

Who is best Rock/Classic Rock morning shows out there...syndicated or otherwise....

I haven't head O&A's new FM show...so I can't say anything about that.

You bring up an interesting question . This is also difficult to answer. I'm just a jock not a PD but I've been around enough morning shows to get an understanding of what works and what doesn't . What do listeners want ? 2 person morning show complete with topics, phoners..listener interaction ..a morning show that does thier homework on the town ...? solo morning show: less talk more rock ? .... morning shows we all know are the benchmark of a stations success . Yes...local morning shows can work ...the right chemistry and the right PD . Just my 2 cents on rock morning shows.

should that local show attempt to be a syndicated show? (tons of bits, personality, ect)

or is "more music mornings" the way to go...cause I've never really seen that work very well.

Well Sterns replacement here is Seattle is BJ Shea and his show has been pulling in great numbers since they took over for Howard in January. For some reason these guys were able to retain Sterns audience in this market where other Stern replacements in other markets failed. The show as of now is not syndicated but that could change if they keep showing well.

They do have Internet Streaming so check them out at www.kisw.com

I remember when the active rocker in Minneapolis tried to bring Stern into the market to take on KQ icon Tom Bernard. It was a bloodbath. Stern limped out of the market with his tail between his legs. A good local show will destroy syndicated shows any day of the week. The question is. Are you willing to do the research and the work to find out what the listeners want?

What's the best choice for a rock morning show?

First, do your homework. I've always been a guy who likes to trust my gut instinct, which is great for music decisions, NOT when it comes to inserting a new morning show. Find out what the market WANTS, not what you THINK it needs. Some markets are ripe for a shockjock, some want lots of music and interaction. Do your homework.

Second, Look within your market first before going outside for new talent. "Familiar" still wins with a lot of listeners. That's why bringing Rick Dees back to LA was such a great "move"(sorry couldnt resist). Is there an established morning show in town that wants some new scenery?

Third, don't settle for anything less than what you want. If you hire a talent that is "90% of what we want"...look out for trouble down the road. Don't just hire that talent because they're a bargain either...making programming decisions based on budget restrictions is not the way to build a winner. Keep looking! Critics keep saying the talent pool is drying up and I'm telling you that's a crock of shit. Just know what you want before you begin to look!

Fourth, and finally, in our format the morning show has to be all about the "show". Surround them with cutting edge imaging, ALL the tools and studio toys, and plenty of multimedia promotion that keeps them consistantly in the eyes of the potential listener.

Rock with respect.
