Rock Radio Archive

This week on the Rock Radio Archive some WYSL history in the form of a singing newscast with famous talk show host
and newsman Brad Messer from Feb 1968. A young Chris Clark, some photos and the old WYSL jacket logo can all be found at
http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/index.html

Contribute your airchecks, jingles and WNY memories and remember radio has no borders.

Thanks to Dale Patterson "the keeper of the fire" for keeping this vast archive of radio alive for all of us to enjoy
around the world.

It's great to have all this, but why does it have to suddenly stop in time?
Why can't there be a similar site that covers more recent years from the 80's to early 00's?

Not much memorable radio coming from the conglomerates and their satellite dishes and hard drives....

There's a divergence in attitudes about the 80s, especially regarding music. Some say it was a period of experimentation and innovation, others say the 80's generally sucked, with big hair bands and girl groups that lasted as long as a 50 dollar suit. There was some very good radio to be heard on the AM and FM band in Buffalo in the 80s and the competition was intense. The FM band was on its way to dominance as four CHRs competed at one time and then three AORs battled it out. Formats flipped almost at a whim. De-regulation had not yet arrived and there was more competition and more importantly, an abundance of live, local talent on the air in all dayparts. Voice-tracking, especially out-of-market atonality, and syndication had not reared its ugly head. Compare that to what's going on today and "the 80's" seems like the golden era. Imagine that.

Anyone remember WBEN used to do a talk show in the lobby of the Statler? Well coming in we would pass by Van or
however it was doing those shows on the way to the 18th floor and the lavish WYSL studios. It was nice if you got hungry on the air
because they would bring up some room service from the kitchen. By the way I have heard some spots from recent times
that were very creative and need to be saved for all to hear post 80s.

And go Bills. Whats the word on TO?

Thanks
Paul
