Rock radio at night

As a listener, I like to tune in rock music radio before I go to bed. During the day I listen to other formats as I just don't care for rock then. I'm not talking about the heavy metal type either like WAMX X 106-3. Active/alternative is the best at night - anyone else feel the same way? I'm just wondering if most people listen to rock at night or during the day usually.

You will find that rock radio keeps the music tamer during the day as they are trying to appeal to a wider audience, hince most stations after 7pm or so start player harder hits and newer music than during the day.

For example, most 40-something year olds won't test well with Slipknot's newest song "psychosocial" due to the screaming. once they are gone from listening (as usually you'd have that station on say at work and communitng , these older listeners go home and go for the kids and tv afterwards and won't listen to the radio now until their next commute usually) more of the younger crowd will come in and they will play newer music and harder as the advertisers are less likely to buy at that hour, more younger kids cruising and listening etc. etc.

I know of a classic rock station that plays new rock songs (as part of a program) but only late at night (on the weekends) to not tick off their tried and true P1s

But I listen to multiple formats and at multiple times

Actually I disagree, 40+ people love Metal, they grew up on Metal, classic rock is mostly Metal, Slipknot is just as well recieved by 40+ as is Metallica or AcDc

I also agree on that one I'm in my 40,s I love my metal classic rock along with todays active and alterative rock,Like the old Z-rock saying "If it's to loud, your to old.

I've met a lot of people who love today's active rock list but the original post was about why it gets harder/better at night. I find that the older listeners aren't into the screaming of some bands as evidenced by the taming down of some songs such as Killswitch Engage's hit "My Curse". I'm in my 30s and love the new stuff as well as the older metal and classic rock, however I've met people who for some reason believe that once you hit a certain age , that some of the new rock is too hard or weird for them (such as marilyn manson). I've seen it in people in their late 20s who won't listen to nothing but classic rock, but have seen 50+ year olds headbanging to a lot of the new rock... but some of the harder selections of the active/alternative lists are buried at night on many stations IMO

I agree with ya RFLA. You narrow your audience too much if you rock too hard during the workday. Dayparting is a must for classic and mainstream rock stations.

But, if you are an active rocker obviously with a younger demo, you can rock harder during the day...but of course, everything has to be in balance and meeting YOUR SPECIFIC AUDIENCE'S expectations. When I was PD of my active rocker, we pulled out all the stops...but we made sure it was expected of us by the audience. AND we threw it in the face of the long-standing classic rocker in town with imaging that positioned them as "dinosaur rock"...we kicked their ass first book. Man that was fun!
