Rock radio in Montgomery

ok, so rick and guys at WXFX have been at the classic rock/current rock thing for nearly 28 years if i am correct.

but does anyone think there truly is a marketable demographic that warrants the city of montgomery to have it's own local rock station instead of simulcasting the tiger from auburn?

i know from the sales point of view they don't have faith in it, but i'm thinking 100 miles outside the box and i believe that the audience is there, for the tiger to still be simulcasting in montgomery for almost 10 years has to show there is the demand.

atleast montgomery needs a strong new rock/alternative station that can be heard clearly anywhere in the city of montgomery.
______________

Fox is almost 15 years old... I built the tiger with Tom Haley and Randall Hughey in Auburn. (put it on the air) I also did the deal to get the translator on the air in Montgomery... I was on the roof of Jackson when we turned it on. You'd have to ask Tom if he's making any money...
I'm sure Fox is making cumulus some change... I don't think Tiger's Montgomery 104.9 does much but buy lunch. I don't think Montgomery is big enough for a new rock station. You better have a lot of cash to burn if you want to get one off the ground.

skip,

first off don't read too little into what i say, cause i'm in no ways implying that the tiger is not making any money. i enjoy listening to the tiger more than i listen to the fox.

my only complaint against the tiger is that the montgomery translator is too weak of a signal and 9 times out of 10 barely comes in at all unless your sitting in the parking lot of jackson hospital.

but you are wrong when it comes down to whether montgomery is big enough for a real rock station or not, because i know for a fact that as a cumulus employee you would not like to see a another montgomery based rock station.

i dare you to go out to eastdale mall and poll everyone on whether or not they would like to see a montgomery based rock station and i am sure you will find many that will say yes.

Birmingham had a great rock station...had being the key word. The city is 5 times bigger than Montgomery and the books couldn't balance to keep it on the air. Of course you can say that 97.3 is cursed too, but that is another story.

i agree, birmingham had a great station with 107.7 the x, and for it to be a great station was more about the programming than the sales dept.

the tiger in auburn is a good station, not great but good, pd kevin jackson is doing well with it.

I was thinking more about Rock 97.3...but the X would fall under about the same category, once great...not anymore.

95.1 The Fox used to have more new rock on it back in 1996, 1997. But that was right after Live 101.9 changed to Cat Country 102...I believe the new rock focus was more due to trying to absorb the former live listeners into the Fox family. The Fox back then also had more of a competitor in Arrow 96.1 (classic hits). 96.1 in its Alice form is still Fox's closest competitor...Tiger also if you count translators.

In order to meet corporate radios #1 and #2 goals to make money and program a good station...Fox is about all Montgomery will ever have.

i don't really think translators count, if so, the fox would be pushing to beat out tiger 95.9.

my theory in this, is that a translator to simulcast the tiger would satisfy rock listeners. prove to me that there is not a need for a strong rock station i n montgomery.

take a look at the success of a club down the street from the fox called off the wagon, they have been bringing in top national talent, but most of their acts recently like reverend horton heat would never be played on corporate radio and newer bands like socialburn and dark new day have never been played before on the fox until atleast a week or 2 before the concert.

it's even funnier how many local bands are so anti-corporate yet line up every week to get their stuff played on sunday night at 7pm when absolutely no one is listening.
until someone who has the brass balls to start up a station comes along, and then they would need a young energetic person who thinks way outside the box to program it.
______________

Why complain about the Montgomery scene? Y'all have 1.5 decent rock stations, which at this point in time is 1.5 more than Birmingham has. And you might as well forget about hearing any new rock in NE Alabama at all unless you've got an antenna good enough to get the Rocket from Huntsville and/or the Buzz from Atlanta.

From what little I've heard of Fox (it and Rocket usually kill each other off on my DX setup, so I don't hear it unless I'm in the area), I've dug it. Maybe too much older stuff, but considering most of what's played on new rock radio these days, that's probably a good thing.

jason... what? from your post....

"it's even funnier how many local bands are so anti-corporate yet line up every week to get their stuff played on sunday night at 7pm when absolutely no one is listening."

have you seen the numbers ... Ricks program is one of the best on the station and pulls great numbers on sunday night... also.. several bands have been signed to record deals because of that show...

PLEASE.... come on jason... if you don't like Fox listen to Tiger..but know what your talking about....

I would love to have a station like fox up here in huntsville, our 95.1 (rocket), is the exact opposite with mostly new rock and some classic rock thrown in, but our classic rock station (106-1 TAK) bites wind, not only in their poor signal but the bland playlist too

950 used to be the home of rock in Montgomery, and I'd bet it isn't doing jack (not "Jack") as far as any usabale ratings or revenue with Frank Sinatra and elevator music.

Would it be against all radio logic fine tune the signal (AM Stereo? HD Radio?) and put an alternative format there to try and compliment WXFX?
______________

Actually, it seems that it's doing as well as can be expected for a standards AM (ie, it actually shows up in the book and beats a couple of gospel stations.) I doubt going alternative and utilizing technology that no listeners actually have would do anything other than tick the old (pun not intended) listeners off and cost them their funeral home and medical supply ads. :)

again, i'm not attacking anyone here, rick does a great job supporting the local bands, but at other stations, local bands get thrown into regular roatation, look at 99x and the buzz, i have heard a great mix of local talent during weekdays.

if i'm wrong on anything, fine i'm wrong, i'm just stating my opinions and thinking outside the corporate box.

most of what i said was taken from what i have heard first hand from many local artists.

I am not trying to preach, but mainly to provide observations from what I have learned.

This is whole spill is based on your corporate box comment. Radio is a corporate environment, not everyone likes it, but it is a fact. Radio is not the same operations of the past...things are lean, mean and profit driven. The job (I imagine) is still fun though...you just have to think when ever you do something (music, shows, etc), how will this effect my ratings and my advertising potential.
Comments like I think outside of the corporate box imply that you feel corporations are bad. When you seek employment with a corporation, it is not always good to immediately say that you are a corporate rule breaker. Thinking outside the box, pretty much will keep you out of the box.
I used to be of the same thoughts, that big radio was not the best way to serve the listener. I entered the sales side and quickly realized that you have to think as an owner, not a music enthusiast, or as even a listener. The only way an owner makes money is if the station makes money. The format, the programming staff, the sales staff...they all have to be to studied and ran to provide optimal profit.
If you feel that rock radio is really needed here in Montgomery, I would approach the subject in how it would benefit the owner. You have to show that your format is the one for his particular signal, that it can produce more profits than the current format. Research, research, research. Look at other similar markets...call the owners, call the PD's. Find out why they are succedding, how many staff members they have, their operating expenses, their target audience, their target advertisers, what their return on investment is. It will take a lot of work, but a professional, well thought presentation could be what is needed to influence the owner to what you think. Doesn't mean they will switch formats immediately or at all...doesn't mean they will hire you either, but you would definitely make a lasting impression.

good point there B5.

but my comments about thinking outside the box does not imply i'm anti-corporate , i've done time at clear channel and enjoyed it well, i studied this business by working closely with Bill Moody and Al Connors and even leanred alot about clear channel from Bobby Lane.

i've done my own research, and i can assure you i have a valid prentation that proves from all points of view how effective a modern rock station based solely in montgomery can do, how it can gain and retain advertising dollars, the marketing possibilities, everything from all points of view comepletly.

when i say i think outside of the box, i mean that in that since i'm still in my mid 20's i can relate 100% to the target demographic, unlike people like skipper, who are pushing into the baby boomer generation (no offense there skip).

>I agree with the Skipper. New Rock stations are hard to sell... and they never have super strong books... and if you think that playing only new music helps your station in a big way you are wrong. It's a shame but the truth... oh by the way New Rock stations never have great success...Allow me to present the beloved HFS or Y100 Philly.... ah may Y100 rest in peace... 2 awesome stations awesome markets and no longer avail. btw what's up SKipper you never say hi!
