??? Chickenfoot ,explain to me in the 4th largest city in the USA how they can pimp tickets but not play the music

Houston is market #6, not #4. San Francisco is #4, Dallas is #5.

There are still a few knuckleheads that don't understand that market size is what counts, not the size of the central city.

City of Houston proper is bigger than the City of Dallas proper, but DFW is the bigger market.

He said "4th largest city, (which is correct) not "market." duh.

Either way, its still a legit question, hair-splitting aside.

Well yeah, they cheat with (hyphen)-Fort Worth. All we get is (hyphen)-Galveston, which cant help it because they get hurricanes. Lets get Fort Worth a hurricane and see how hooty tooty Dallas is then.

I dont know who chickenfoot is, but I wish we would play them somewhere. I dont even know if rock even exists anymore. I think it all went Spanish.

If we go by that then the entire Island of Puerto Rico is the US's 14th largest city. ;) ;D

No, it's the 14th Market. It's been served by media as a single market for 5 or 6 decades... only TV origination is in San Juan, only newspapers are in San Juan, and 90% of radio listening is to San Juan based simulcasts.

This is more understanable if we look at the New York and San Francisco metros (or Metro Survey Areas per Arbitron). Unfortunately, the abbreviation, MSA, means Metropolitan Statistical Area to the Census, while it means Metropolitan Survey Area to Arbitron. The areas are, as often as not, not identical.

San Francisco's MSA goes from Santa Rosa to the north to Campbell to the south and includes the embedded break-out markets of San Jose and Santa Rosa. Only a couple of stations cover the entire area, in fact, and they are the big FMs.

And the New York metro includes pieces of 3 states, and goes all the way our to Sag Harbor, including a handful of embedded markets, too. Most stations in the metro don't cover all of this, either.

This is one of those threads that has now veered waaaay off topic. To return to the original post:

Chickenfoot's one of those "supergroups" whose members received enough airplay in previous bands and past times that they've got a substantial ticket-buying fan base whether their current songs are played or not. It's an easy ticket sell just to hand out a few free pairs of tix on the air and mention Satriani, Smith, Anthony, and Hagar in the same breath. Most of the promotion that they've done thus far to woo younger-demo fans has occurred online.

If you want some of their song downloads, here's one place to start:

There is no Houston "Rock Radio" anymore.

Amen... Especially for old bands (or old guys forming a new band) with new music! AC/DC, Rush, Guns N Roses, The Eagles, Steely Dan... Fuhgeddaboudit!! It always seemed against the grain to promote some of these bands that have music they don't play! It always made the station seem stupid... Mostly because they should be playing whatever it is! D&R played the new AC/DC song but of course talked over most of the song!! The usual crap about this song rocks! Yeah, blah blah blah. You'll be hearing more of this song!! (Which was a lie!) Although I will give D&R credit for last year's tributes to Dan Fogelberg and Jeff Healy.

Yeah I know old artists' new cd's don't sell so good, but a heck of alot of them go to #1 with virtually no airplay. Whatever happened to the days of sales being generated BECAUSE something was played on the radio?

There are so many great rock/alt/metal bands that come through town with ZERO radio play. A shame, but a reality.

My fear is that someone will put a "rock" radio station in houston and duplicate KLOL. That station, in it's later years, was a dog. Lame jocks, same 40 songs, and no new additions.

How about this - KACC does a WAY better job at programming rock radio than rock radio programmers in this town. Shame, shame, shame.

Thank's for all the replys as a listener and a drummer I'm glad I'm not alone.I love KACC but live where enjoying them online is pretty much it. I get Big Dog out of Beaumont and wonder why they have a station like that and Houston doesn't. Please somebody put an active rocker in Houston.

Does anyone ever recall of,Houston ever having an active rock station?

Not since the "active rock" format was developed. The closest thing was Z-Rock's two Houston stints in the late 80s-early 90s.

I remember z rock a little bit, but i really didn't listen to the radio back then. I was only 9. I was always forced to listen to oldies 945

I remember the loud station (Z-Rock) at the right end of the dial. Actually think that would be a better idea for 2009.
It was running wide open and must have hit something pretty solid in Houston. I think I remember hearing a rendition some years later in New Mexico. However, that was a rehab stay, two marriages, and about a half a dozen hurricanes ago.

Anyone with a magic wand, please wave it.
Will be back in Houston in a few hours. It would be nice to hear some "Active Rock" over breakfast.
Also, if anyone could delete the hurricanes and give me another shot at the aforementioned additional items, it would be fantastic!
