Rock Stations

When I was programming active rock 96.9 the Edge in Gillette, WY. We played Slayer at 7am and we played Sepultura, Lamb of God and a whole bunch more. We also played Zeppelin, Floyd and the Doors and the listeners loved it. XM and serious are much more likely to play the same songs over and over again then most rockers these days. I've got an idea. Why don't you xm fans send me 6.95 a month. That way I'll be the one getting rich off of you and you'll only be throwing away half your money.

my favorites

WZZO-Lehigh Valley PA
WDHA-Dover,NJ
WNNJ-Sussex County, NJ
WDVE-Pittsburgh
CHOM 97.7-Montreal
WTOS-(Top Of Sugarloaf,Maine)
WBLM-Portland,ME
Rock 101-Vancouver
WNOR-Hampton Roads,VA

There was another classic rock station I liked from the Pacific Northwest and I cant remember the name of the station. It was on 92.7 or 92.9. They werent from Seattle, but when I was on the Olympic Peninsula the reception was really strong. Maybe from Bellingham or north Seattle suburbs. It was a 'K' station, so definitely not from Vancouver or Victoria.

92.5 KZPS,Dallas................

KZPS,

Ahh ..memories . Haven't been in TX for a couple years . Worked part time in San Antonio . Used to tune in KZPS often on my road trips thru TX. How does it sound today ?

Well, it all depends on what you like. Truth be told, Greater Media's "Active Rock" (actually Mainstream Rock) stations are pretty middle of the road. You'll hear lots of the same old rock hits of the past 30-odd years that have been slammed into the ground, very few unexpected tracks, and only about 20 currents played VERY often. There's a positive element to that, in that it's the musical equivalent of comfort food. But if you're a format aficionado that likes the unexpected, chances are you'll be disappointed.

wrat and wdha seem a lot like wmmr, which is my favorite station now that 97.5 is gone, i like hearing the classics and the modern, mostly the classics.

wzzo does a good job at mixing it up, the only thing is i never hear them play "Tool", does naybody know why they dont?

WZZO is a mainstream rocker, one that seems to be formatted even tighter than Greater Media's stations. If I had to guess, it would be that Tool might be considered too edgy for the standards of this particular station. Tool is seldom heard on GM's stations as well, with the exception of current single "The Pot". The fact that their songs are longer than average would be another strike against them. Clear Channel and Greater Media are known for programming that is very cookie-cutter, and that means having a very accessible sound, streamlining the rock format for the masses. In that case, even multi-platinum bands such as Tool and System Of A Down can get lost in the shuffle, as they are considered "too eccentric" for the tastes of the average Mainstream Rock fan. I'm a big fan of both bands, but as far as CC and GM are concerned, the average fan of this format just wants to hear "Stairway To Heaven", "Freebird", and "Carry On My Wayward Son" played over and over again.

mmr and ysp play tool pretty often...especially "The Pot" and "Vicarious" which are my 2 favorites...SOAD however, rock, but dont get the airplay they deserve

I mostly enjoy Chattanooga's "KZ 106" (all Classic Rock), and Montgomery, AL's "95.1 The Fox" (Classic Rock / New Rock)
Huntsville AL's "Rocket 95.1" as well (New Rock / Classic Rock)

The two 95.1s frustrate me because it's impossible to get just one of them here. If they're coming in at all, it's both of them at once.

Have you gotten the chance to check out the new Project 96.1 in Atlanta yet? Great sounding station, IMO.

104.7 The Edge in Fairbanks, AK is definetley the best rock station. I lived there for three years and never got tired of it. Learned a lot of great rock songs I never heard before.

I listend to WUSW 103.7 The Fox in Hattiesburg and they played New rock and classic rock, along with some Local rock too. But now i live near Panama City, FL and i have to say that we have a 3 great stations for your every Taste of rock.

WYYX 97X- New Rock
WFBX 94.5 The Fox- Classic and new rock
WRBA Arrow 95.9- Classic rock

and on a cloudy day Gulf 104- Classic and New Rock in Tallahassee

I have heard slayer on terresterial radio, WOSC 95.9 96 Rock, when they were Delmarva's Best rock. I heard "raining blood" couldn't believe it when i heard it. The old 96 Rock was a HARD rocker, one of the best IMO.

That station owned. I always longed for the times where there was an opening and I could pull in stations from the south instead of the pedestrian AOR we have here in Jersey on 95.9 (WRAT), and 96 Rock was fantastic. Deep playlist with a definite heavy slant - the station never got boring. Then it became "The New 96 Rock" and turned into a run-of-the-mill Clear Channel rock station. They thought it would translate to ratings gold but it sure hasn't. Maybe it's time to consider a change back to the original 96 Rock? Oh well, at least that area has 93.5 The Beach, which is also a good heavy Active Rocker, if a little less surprising than 96 Rock was.

Classic Rock is now in Abbeville and Greenwood SC every Sunday morning on WABV. The programming is provided by European Broadcaster 'Pipeline Radio' -

I've never heard of PipelineRadio before.

Anyone else ever heard it before and know anything about it?

I'm a big fan of Q104 in Halifax,NS C103 in Moncton,NB K-Rock in Charlottetown,PE and Fred in Fredericton, NB ;)
