Rockin' Ray Gooding Passes

Ray Gooding, "Rockin' Ray" has died. WBT's noon news on Monday May 14th said he died the night of May 13th. No arrangements yet.

If anyone has any Rockin' Ray photos, airchecks, or comments they could share for a tribute page for Ray, please submit the information following directions at the http://www.tragic96.com website's CONTACT US link for me.

Ray was on the air in the Charlotte market for over 30 years. He made a guest appearance on the John Hancock show about 6 months ago or so.

"Stick...Stay...and don't you ever....go away!"

I thought about him last week. Sad news! I remember listening to him many Sunday nights on WBT, not to mention his WGIV days! He will be missed. I last heard him on Magic around 01.

You wanted an education on Charlotte radio history, all you had to do was sit and listen to Ray for a few minutes. The guy had been there, seen it all, and got the t-shirt.

I remember when we did mornings on Magic when the powerball was up to some astronomical amount...we sent our producer, Ethan "Flash" Herb, across the Virginia border to get a bunch of lottery tickets...Ethan came back and played us a phone message he'd gotten from Ray, who was asking Ethan to pick up a few lotto tickets for him. Ray added "if I hit it big, I'll slip ya a mil."

He must be lining up one hell of a string of interviews by now.

the charlotte.com webside has a very nice condolence message board

Never met Ray, but had a tour of WGIV when I was 7 years old, around 1961! Got to meet Chatty Hattie! What memories! Ray will be missed!

WOW!!! What a sad day in QC radio... I met ray one day at Reliable Music while I was getting my mobile DJ equipment serviced... I don't remember what he was there for I just knew who he was the moment I heard his voice and it was one of the best fifteen minutes of my life... RIP ray and I bet he is smiling down on us all with a whole lot of Temps and Tops... CC1

I had the good fortune of working at WBT from '85-'90. For many of those years I was on both before and after Ray. He was amazing a true radio natural. I never saw Ray in a bad mood ever, and he never had a bad word to say about anyone.

He and Henry Bogan are probably having a great time right now.

I'm glad Ray got his tribute while he was still alive with the roast they did for him a couple of years ago. I remember thinking he didn't seem to be doing well at the time but he did remember me and we had a nice chat.

Many people don't realize it but Ray was a good businessman. He owned some houses that he rented in Charlotte and also dabbled in the "976" phone line business. There was also his work in the community as WBT's Public Service Director. I don't think they could have found anyone better for the job.

Much is said about the 50,000 watts of WBT but actually it's the people I worked with there who made a lasting impression on me. It was a privlidge to know every one of them.

Me also at WBT from '91-'94. I had a weekend airshift in addition to my weekday production gruntery. I was on right before Rockin' Ray. Mostly, I talked to him about real estate because I was trying to find a place. His answer was always, "don't rent from a slumlord like me."
