Today, while it was so hot, I was digging around in the archives, and found notes from a Mass Media class I took when I was a sophomore in high school back in 1982. I had some cool stuff I did (or so I thought) back then and kept it. (You should hear my Iowa Radio Network basketball broadcasts with Sherm Scharmann) (Kevin Boyle, just outside the lane, 13 footer...Good! Iowa beats Purdue!) But I digress. It was in Sanborn, in NW Iowa, which is about 45 miles from SD, and 25 miles from MN if you never heard of it--Sioux City and Sioux Falls are the media markets covering that area.
Anyway, I took a survey of 20 people, 10 adults, and 10 fellow students on their 3 most listened to radio stations. Kinda funny looking at them. I noticed the prevalance of AM rockers, some many miles away. Not an FM rocker on the list with more than one vote, except KCHE in Cherokee which went from MOR during the day, to rock at night. Anyway, in April 1982, the #1 station in Sanborn, according to my highly unscientific survey is (with number of votes)

WOW Omaha 10 (oh, I miss those calls and apparently every high schooler at the time had it in their top 3-and probably 140 air miles from the transmitter.)
KELO Sioux Falls 8 (13K top 40 in the day, news/talk now I think)
KICD Spencer 7
KWSL Sioux City 7 (top 40 then, Fox Sports now)
KELO-FM Sioux Falls 3 (I think they were elevator music then)
KCHE-FM Cherokee 2 (High School DJ spinning the rock after 6PM-I remember they always played She's Tight by Cheap Trick, never heard it on air anywhere else)
WLS Chicago 2
KIWA Sheldon 2
WNAX Yankton,SD 2 (this booms into central Iowa AM 570, they claim the nation's biggest daytime footprint I think)
KLOH-FM Pipeston MN (oldies then maybe??)
And one vote each for KLEM Lemars, KMNS Sioux City (maybe rock then, I dont remember when they flipped to country), KZZL-FM Lemars (elevator I think), KIOV Sioux Falls, KSCJ Sioux City, WOI Ames, KWMT Fort Dodge, KBCM-FM Sioux City (KBigCountryMusic, now KG95), WHO Des Moines, KWOA-FM Worthington MN, and KSEZ-FM Sioux City(before they raised power, pretty scratchy in Sanborn at the time)
On TV, ABC must've had the killer lineup at the time, and I recall the "Major 9" News was the thing. 13 people had KCAU-9 the ABC affiliate in Sioux City as the most watched station, 2 for HBO, and 1 each for KSFY-13 ABC Sioux Falls, IPTV, KELO-11 CBS Sioux Falls, MTV, and KTIV-4 NBC Sioux City. What was hot in 1982, Mork and Mindy? Sheesh, I don't know. Anyway, I just thought this was kinda funny to look at, and thought I would pass it along.
