Rocky and the Q

Without spilling any of the numbers, I was surprised to see Altoona's Rocky 104.9 fare better than Q94 for the first time.

I find the music on Q94 much more pleasing to the ear. Rocky is just too much head banging stuff for me. But, Rocky seems to have better imaging, better jocks and it has better sounding processing as well.

It does seem like Q-94's library is REALLY tight however. I wonder if this will make them rush out and buy more music to expand on things a little? I think if The Bus were in Altoona going Head to Head against Rocky, the Bus would win hands down. Maybe the guys at the Q should give them a listen for a while???

On a side note...WHPA got numbers in Altoona. I know that HPA is what Rocky USED to be a long time ago. As far as I am aware, no new station with those calls took its place in Altoona, so that would mean that some guy with a book actually thought he had listened to it recently and recorded it in his diary. I thought people who pick apart the books would enjoy that. Further proof that the system is not perfect...but its the best we got! Also a good indication that Altoona is still in need of a GOOD A/C outlet.

HPA is the Flagship station for the Altoona Curve, that may account for the
Altoona Numbers.

QWK used to show in the Altoona book, but 98.7 doesn't have the signal in Altoona that 97.1 does, and I notice that QWK doesn't appear. A little of Rocky's growth could be due to that.

Q94 has done well in the past despite their small library. A bigger library would be an improvement.

WHPA is at 93.5, an oldies station and they carry the Curve games. The license is out of Northern Cambria if I remember correctly.

Another nice book for WALY, more huge numbers for Froggy, neither is a surprise.

I see that 100.1 took back some of what they lost. With 99.1 coming into Altoona with a strong signal, they have to be cannibalizing some of the 100.1 numbers.

Big increase for WKMC. WFBG and WVAM continue to be ignored. For WFBG, they made the change to news talk a couple of years ago and didn't bother to tell anybody about it.

I think this relates to your prior thread about the "Oldies" format becoming outdated and obsolete. The "Classic Rock" format is late '60s and '70s, essentially the same time period of the "Oldies" format. Repetition of songs is one thing, necessitating that Q94 expand the library, but also there is a need to expand the time period the format encompasses. Infinity has been replacing "Oldies" formats (WCBS-FM New York, WMJK Chicago, WQSR Baltimore) with other formats, and many "Classic Rock" formats are morphing into "Classic Hits."
