Rocky Point

For a few hours earlier today. The City Of Warwick opened a portion of Rocky Point to the public. Did anyone here go? Take any pictures? According to WPRI. A few buildings on the site are still standing. Is this true? What are the plans for those buildings?

I was inspired one summer afternoon to pursue a career in radio while listening to WPRO's midday jock, Dave Sennett who was allegedly broadcasting live from poolside at Rocky Point. It occurred to my adolescent mind that playing records from a poolside location on a beautiful July day might be a great way to earn a living. Of course, now I realize that Dave was probably sitting in the WPRO studios playing sound effects during his live
breaks. Theater of the mind!

Anybody remember the Rock & Roll Express at Rocky Point? I think they actually played HJY on the ride.
And today another institution was destroyed: BARRY'S BARRY'S BARRY'S nightclub in Warwick. I bet Holland was there in a light blue leisure suit filming a video for youtube with The Best Disco In Town by The Ritchie Family as the music.

Damn....where the hell am I gonna get my Barry's burger?!? :)

Great Barry's story. Did a personal appearance one night, and it was so busy, Barry couldn't find a time to cut a check. Told me to come back the next afternoon. I did. Front door was unlocked so I went in to the DIMLY lit Barry's. I heard a noise from the outside and figured Barry was cleaning up. As I walked 20 feet further in, two large snarling Doberman's ran full speed towards me and boxed me in at the bar. Snarling, barking, and white teeth sparkling they held me at bay for what seemed an eternity. Suddenly Barry appeared, Said the dogs were harmless (sure) and handed me a check. I left, and the dogs stirred again. Not being into disco,& snarling dogs, I gave the club to Tyler. (Big mistake, he collected $75 a week for months as Barry's was a big PRO-FM advertiser) Another funny night club story. Back in the 70's on PRO AM, I used to do Gullivers in Smithfield. I noticed a new "different club" opened down the street. Got the owners name and told Larry Kruger to call him to do some advertising/night club appearances. (figuring competition is good & we'd both make cash at each respective club.) Larry wasn't good at the "selling" part of the club scene, so I did it for him. And Larry wasn't very observant either. He did appearances at that dimly lit night club for 3 weeks before he realized he was on air promoting, and appearing at a gay night club. Unheard of at the time. Seems like all the jocks on the staff knew about it, but not the guy who appeared there. (not that there's anything wrong with it....) When Larry found out, he matter of factly said, "no wonder I never saw any women there.."

That story about Larry at the gay club is hilarious. So maybe the patrons there gave him the "ice cold" nickname?

..........Great line...wish I had thought of it. Another obvious note Larry missed...outside, behind the club they had an inground swimming pool for use in the summer, which is the time he did his two appearances...he never put the pool, the "speedo's" and the lack of females together....but hey, the cash was green, (and evidently so was Larry)
