Rod Ryan

MY final thoughts on this thread

First and foremost, I'm not Kat. Thanks for the compliment because I agree with Marconi and think she's fabulous, but if you people notice, she's posted on here before under *GASP* her REAL NAME. Ah, but I know you conspiracy theorists too well. It must be a clever ruse to make a new user name just to defend Rod Ryan! If I were Kat, wouldn't I defend myself first, then maybe Rod? Hmm, another part of my clever covert ruse to throw you all off track I suppose. Whatever. I work for a promotional products company. Need some pens or coffee mugs? Gimme a call, I could use the business. As for Hooks, I'm glad I'm not Kat and I don't know you because quite frankly you sound like a pompous ass.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and mine is I'm done. I got on this board because someone from the Rod Ryan Army said they heard WRNO was going to flip to new rock on this board and I wanted to check it out. I've found more trash-talking and mud slinging than info, so... so long, farewell, Auf wiedersehn, goodbye.

Re: MY final thoughts on this thread

Geez! Well there can't be a long ass string about WRNO without me throwing in my 2 cents worth (and howdy Jayseph...miss ya). WRNO will never EVER have the hayday it did back in the day, it was the most fun in radio besides WNOE in the 70's under C.C. Courtney that I ever had, even with having to deal with the Costello's. The summertime kite festivals in City Park, the tubing trips down the cow-turd ladened Tchefuncte...total community and listener involvement. I was at the Zebra hurricane relief show last month at the Howlin' Wolf, felt like I shoulda been on stage introducing Zebra (even if I woulda been only representin' Gulfport-Biloxi and WRNO in "the day!") We were the ones that helped make the band! WRNO definitely has the potential and the heritage, but I'm afraid it's slipping away into that big black modulation hole of nothingness...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Still homeless in Gulfport...

I wasn't at WRNO long, maybe a year, but working with Weerdo, Pal Al, Warren and the rest was sure a lot of fun. It was the mid '80s and I missed out on the early years but even then it was something. I'm happy to count Weerdo, Pal & Warren as my friends even after all these years.

Hooks, I don't know you and I wasn't a big fan of your on-air style but after reading your posts I have a higher opinion of you now. And you're right about Bruce Allen and Janessa Dawn. I got to know them at MetroScan and they're great. I've been in and out of this business since 1979 and it's unfortunate what has happened to it.

Well one of the things (other than the opinion of others in radio) is we all speculate on which company has a next move.

I was one to speculate that Rod Ryan was coming back to WRNO because he was known to the locals (cause other than Stern, people from outside of the gulf coast seem to do lousy on rock radio in NOLA..like Bob and Tom), and was already in the CC Cluster (albet in Houston)..According to Hooks however it was different.

Samething here with RNO... New Orleans has had at least one station playing current top 40 rock somewhere's for at least 20-25 years (It was WRNO then WCKW, then KKND) We were all just speculating since the ratings are going down with competition for WRNO, if they wouldn't add currents and recurrents to the playlist or would WKBU just add currents (god forbid that both decide not toput it on).... I'm a fan of new and classics.. If RNO would flip, figure they would keep everyone cause if you would have done the search, you would have found a post recently done saying most people at RNO have been at modern rockers in the past...

Also you talk about the Rod Ryan army wondering about our talk about a flip.... We all wonder if it was for a flip or not...Since Rod is at the CC Modern Rocker in Houston.

KAT cannot hold a candle to TASHA STEVENS, even on Tasha's worse day.
I've met BOTH at their respective remotes, and KAT snubs her listeners when they try to compliment her on her show. On the other hand, Tasha goes out of her way to introduce herself to the crowd and makes friends with the audience.
And also, Tasha, unlike Kat, PROMOTES LOUISIANA ROCK AND ROLL, and her show HAIRBALL was popular in BOTH BATON ROUGE and NEW ORLEANS COMBINED(EXTREMELY ORIGINAL LIKE THE OLD DAYS OF AOR RADIO).
TASHA, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, WE MISS YOU AND WANT YOU BACK ON NEW ORLEANS RADIO. IF WE GOT TO START A PETITION AND SEND IT TO THE BAYOU TO HIRE YOU, THEN IT WILL BE DONE. THE SAME GOES FOR JAY HOOKS AS WELL. SPEAKING OF JAY HOOKS AKA THE DARK ONE, IF IT WEREN'T FOR HOOKS, WALTON AND JOHNSON WOULD NOT BE POPULAR.
TO TASHA AND JAY, THANKS FOR GREAT ROCK-N-ROLL AND NEWS THAT WAS THE TRUTH.

I think we had a great thing going in the 90s with 92.3 WCKW, not only with that signal on a 2,005 foot stick, but with the entire airstaff and facilities.
Pal Al was p.d., Weerdo was m.d., Tommy B. at night, Warren came to us a little later, but we were glad to have him. The station rocked. We had 3 station vans, a big control room, and 3 well equipped production rooms; now how many individual stations can say that today? Oh yeah, we were manned 24/7, we had tickets for every concert in town, and we carried all the best live concert events. Citadel would've done better to move their stations to this spacious location instead of 201 St. Charles, where WRNO was for awhile when I worked there. It's a great skyscraper, but do you want listeners to pay $15.00+ to park in a garage or look for a parking meter when they come to pick up tickets?
Even employees of the station pay between $120.00-$200.00 monthly to park where they work.
92.3 did not look down upon the outlying areas, unlike some of these Yankee carpetbaggers. The station never forgot Laplace, its' city of license. During Mardi Gras, the station was in as many parades as it's 3 vans could get in, from the big parades in the city, to Metairie, Chalmette, the Northshore, and all points in between. It was a station for all Louisiana citizens within earshot, not just the bars on Bourbon street.
Finally, I am very sorry to hear about your post Katrina situation, Weerdo, you have my best wishes forever. I know someone with your talent will be able to turn the situation around. And yeah, WRNO back in the day, long before I got there really rocked and was the template for Rock 92.3.

Thank you, sir. I wasn't proud of everything I said and did on the air over the years and I do have a few regrets. I suppose I could partially blame Telcom 96 for putting stations like WRNO in a situation where 7 stations in a cluster have to schedule time in one tiny, Radio Shack equipped production room. I would've liked more time to pre-produce some bits, etc., but with sales people screaming for spec. spots...well, you know how that goes.

I think I am running the risk of over-posting on this thread, so I'll thank everyone for their thoughts whether they agree with me or not and perhaps Katrina's wrath will at least inform the public about the need to keep radio local.

Yeah, whatever. It's very easy for the same person to post under different fake names on message boards for a variety of reasons. You seem to have more names than Sybil.

As for Hooks, I'm glad I'm not Kat and I don't

It must be difficult for you to read my long posts as you seem like someone who has to move her lips to read a stop sign.

Re: MY final thoughts on this thread

Yup, let's end this waaaay too lengthy thread with a humbled thank you guys from me. I kinda wish we could pick up WXRG and WCPR and drop them 70 miles west---and then watch what would happen! Thanks for the great comments and most importantly, the great Crescent City radio memories and true friendships along the way. It's just not the same anymore.

I wish the blowout party I wanted this past Labor Day celebrating 30 years in 'da biz and 10 years here on the MS Coast wouldn't have been quite the blowout it ended up being...I didn't invite any damn bitch named Katrina anyway! ;-p

Hello Jay. Paul Marshall here. Kudos to you for identifying yourself. You have some valid points being made, but somew things you've dropped are just not the fault of WRNO. Radio staions all over the USA are completely homogenizing. It's not unique to New Orleans.

Agreed. But weren't you part of the W&J show for years? Yeah, I remember back when I was at WCKW, you were ALL about W&J. Did they turn their backs on you? I wouldn't be surprised at all. I do recall you being one of their biggest defenders back a few years ago.

And EVERY city should have local talent. All the broadcast companies tell us the way to beat satellite is to be "live & local" But..so far it's lip service.

If it weren't for Jay Hooks, Walton and Johnson would NOT be as popular as they are right now. Walton and Johnson OWE Jay Hooks for their SURGE in RADIO STOCK.
Even Howard Stern couldn't kick Hooks' ass because THE DARK ONE is so F***IN ORIGINAL........................................

Note: Back in late 1998, Jay Hooks had his own show in the Eagle in BR with Gordy Rush and Trey Parnell as his sidekicks known as RUDE AWAKENINGS,which competed with W&J and ran side by side in ratings.
You see, LOCAL TALENT BEATS TEXAS CARPETBAGGER PIPED IN TALENT.

You are correct, of course, about this being a nationwide problem, thanks to former Represenative Billy Tauzin's Telcom 96.

Clear Channel's station in Alexandria, 96.9 does play the album version of the Who's, Who Are You with the word phuck in it (twice, if I remember the song correctly), but CCNO has the censored version. I also believe that WRNO/Clear Channel New Orleans has problems and issues that are not seen in most other Clear Channel properties nationwide and can and should be addressed, first and foremost, with a good housecleaning.

You could ask their former Houston producer about that. He was fired for rebroadcasting their infamous bicycle comments and it came out that CC management in Houston ordered the tape with the comments destroyed, but it was reaired. I believe you can still find a copy of the document that some group has posted on the internet by Googlesearching "walton&johnson bicycle comments".
It shows the action taken by CC Houston (public apology, p.s.a.s regarding bicycle safety, etc). In other words, the Houston producer was fired for rebroadcasting comments they made, but denied.
For the record, I heard the comments the first time they aired, and yes, they were made. I also heard w&j all but retract their apology numerous times in the months afterward. Not that I care.

I wouldn't be
> surprised at all. I do recall you being one of their biggest
> defenders back a few years ago. Yeah, just like their Houston producer who was fired at KLOL. Actually I defended their right to make such comments, but I do not agree with most of their political views.

Yes, we got along for a few years, but we had growing differences between us.
We currently feel the same way about each other. They don't like me and I don't like them. I don't see that changing anytime this century and it doesn't bother me one bit.

They are also inflicting such bad radio that they want people to turn to $atellite radio.

Thanks for your comments,

Hooks, the shtstirrer.

And if a listener hears it, and files a complaint, that CC station will be fined for airing obscenity.

It's also in violation of CC's alleged "Obscenity guideline".

Technically, no station is allowed to play uncensored music anymore. The FCC says that ANY profanity is potentially actionable, and all the big companies have mandated edits.

It's a joke.
