Rod Stewart - Soulbook

H

Rod Stewart and Clive Davis had solid gold success with the songbooks, all five, probably went gold or better. They have switched genre and released the soulbook, given his soulful voice, I thought, wow, that might be pretty good. I listened to the whole cd, and it just did just didn't grab me like the songbooks. Having said that, he has done a great job in the past with several soul cuts...this effort just didn't click with me, maybe it's just me??? has anyone heard it AND What are you thoughts......the whole thing is on You-Tube and here is the link to one and you can get others and give it a listen.

I don't have sound at home but Ive heard him do some Motown-style stuff on Dial Global. I guess it sounds okay, though I do prefer the standards.

I was given an ugly introduction to this album when I heard his rendition of "If You Don't Know Me By Now". the Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes classic, (popularized by the 1989 Simply Red cover) on KTXR this morning in the office.

Pardon me, but I'm gonna play the original, just to wash my brain of the ick of Stewart's vocals on this song.......

I'm sorry. But Rod, you ain't no Teddy Pendergrass. Neither are you Mick Hucknall. This song is the very EPITOME of a GOOD American standard. If I were to play this song on adult standards, I would STILL pick the original. Because the lyrics had more depth with Pendergrass's voice. The harmonies and music much better matched than the covers.

Even though Simply Red's cover is (sadly) the best known version of this song, For adult standards, I would want something classier. And Rod Stewart's rendition is a joke to my ears. And Simply Red's (although the best attempt yet) was too sweet vanilla for my ears. The original still has a feeling to it. Something that can't be duplicated so easily.......

I can't stand Mick Hucknall. He's not boring but annoying. Give me Teddy Pendergrass anytime. I have yet to hear Rod.

Urban versus Bourbon...I think in the past Adult Standard programmers view Teddy's Version ( "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes") a little to Urban and Simply Red's version a little safer for their predominately white audience...maybe they have loosened up, a bit today..I don't listen to our local soft a/c stations , so maybe, I'm wrong, eh??

Adult standards (at least Dial Global) is playing a lot of R&B from the 70s and earlier so I don't think they have a problem with "urban".

On the subject of Teddy Pendergrass, we lost Whitney Houston this past weekend. The first song I ever heard from her on the radio was a duet with Teddy called "Hold Me". great song.

Try these:

"Right On The Tip Of My Tongue" - Brenda & The Tabulations (1971)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mosor_vfLQ

"Natural High" Bloodstone (1973)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCGGYPtddck

"In The Rain" The Dramatics (1972)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRK4AwS3dh8

"Try Again" Champaign (1983)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd-egNZRfxQ

I think these fit PERFECTLY.

Some '80s R&B ballads do work good. People still love them. But you have to tread very carefully in this decade because even R&B ballads went through some MASSIVE changes through the mid and late '80s. The songs that crossed over to pop (Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie) became Adult Contemporary radio staples for the rest of the decade and well into the '90s and they do well on MOYL

But there are many others that could turn the Adult Standards station you crafted so perfectly into an INSTANT Jammin' Oldies outlet.

For example, with the exception of Stevie Wonder's '80s music, anything else with a high amount of keyboard and drum machine. Like

"Don't Disturb This Groove" The System (1987)*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7pZZGHLQfw

....is one you have to watch carefully. (This is also about the time when the floodgates of Smooth Jazz opened as well.) Without careful selection and rotation, you could also end up another Lite AC station.

*Don't get me wrong, this song is one of my personal all time favorites. I just don't think it's ready for Adult Standards.....Yet.

Others?

I heard "Just My Imagination". I don't care that much for his vocal style on that one, but the instrumental introduction was great. Perfect for standards or easy listening.

I heard "My Cherie Amour" on a smooth jazz station, and it didn't appeal to me. He sounded too much like he did as a rock singer.
