Rodney Ho reporting that Kelly McCoy is retiring

R

Rick Rose 2.0

Guest
Just saw on twitter that B 98.5's Kelly McCoy is voluntarily retiring Friday from his PM drive slot on B 98.5fm. He is leaving the station after 27 years accoring to Ho.

Steve McCoy is in town and The RoHo Report says they're bringing in somebody from outside the market?

I can find nothing to parody here, and nor would I try. Kelly McCoy can say something very few can, he truly is "80s, 90s, and now", as in 27 years straight at one station. Well done.

Is "was" this the longest running current gig at the same station in Atlanta?

I don't know. But this likely puts Mara as the longest-running jock continuously currently at one Atlanta station that I know of, although not in one daypart as she was bounced around a bit in the 2000s. I think Gary Kinsey had a very long run as middays on Kicks, ending as middays at Eagle 106.7.

I understand that Kate McCarthy could be a player here. She has done PMD in this market for their sister station, The River. Plus the hand-offs between Jordan Graye and Kate would be legendary they hate each other so much.

This post is the best way I know how to honor Neil Millman. RIP

It's a real shame that the 106.7 news is dominating local radio news today. To me, the story is clearly Kelly's retirement from B98.5. Just listening to the last couple hours, and the calls that have been coming in from former co-workers, listeners, etc...

Not only is his 27-year-tenure at B a feat unlikely to be matched, his work at Quixie prior to joining B in '85 was truly the stuff that radio legend is (and has been) made of.

Cumulus formats will come and go - there won't be another Kelly McCoy in Atlanta radio...

Save your resumes...despite the "help wanted" ad you've seen, McCoy's replacement will come from Louisville. When he is on air in ATL, he will also VT his gig in Louisville.

Major market, indeed.

Rodney, BTW, Cox seems to be dropping any air talent over 50.( too much experience, ($) I guess)

I'm almost certain he was doing afternoons or maybe weekend fill-ins at z-93 between the time he was at quixie and b....am I right?

Louisville at one time was a "training" market for Cincinnati (Gary Burbank for example). Cincinnati gave us Gary Corry. He just skipped that market. I wish I had too.

No official announcement yet? I'm curious to find out who takes over. I look up to Kelly McCoy.

In related news, I noticed 95.5 the Beat's own K-Dub has joined B98's roster 10p-12m. She goes by Kara Leigh now.
