Rodney's story on the "Bull Party"

Rodney, I saw your story on your blog about the Bull party and had a couple of questions, were you invited and rumor has it that there were only 30 people. Staff outnumbered clients 2 to 1.
By the way if you haven't checked out the coments to the story on the blog do it they are hilarious.
First Braves game is this Saturday, nothing like 4 hours of baseball to keep the 25-54 female engaged!

Off on a tangent, I know, but since when is Eric Clapton's "Layla" a country song? ???

I heard the Bull playing it earlier today. Didn't fit the format...at least not to my ears.

I think they're playing things that they think some people would consider country. The acoustic version of Layla I can somewhat see, also John Mellencamp's "Small Town". I have heard "The Joker" from Steve Miller, and I ain't buying that one. Just because the opening line is "some people call me a Space Cowboy", does not make it a country song.
While I do appreciate them trying to mix it up a bit and playing a few songs that are on the border of being country, they better be careful not to get too cute. The very same fans they're trying to attract by playing some of the older country will turn the station quickly if they hear too much of that stuff.
One more point. I've read elsewhere on this board that whoever they bring in as music director won't matter because their hands will be tied by CC. I think the above discussion proves otherwise. I think this mix of old, new, and sometimes questionable country is probably the work of Lance Houston, so I think he has been given some freedom.

There are some cross over cuts they could bring to the mix and be successful....but the ones mentioned above are NOT the ones to play!!
1. Rolling Stones - Far Away Eyes
2. Neil Young - Helpless
3. Jimmy Buffet - numerous country selections
4. Ween - great country album - pick a cut
5. Leonard Skynard - Curtus Lowe
Just a few suggestions.....there are many more. If they want to pick up 34-54 males these songs make sense.
"Layla" is not appropiate for country. "The Joker" totally does NOT belong.....next it will be Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" to attract the oft overlooked "Brokeback Male Homosexual!"
If this is the work of "Lance" then it proves he hasn't got a clue about this format and will be gone SOON!!
Remember.....there are many trailer P-1's underserved.....I have trashy trailer music for the discerning programmer!

Tom, we just need to have you come down and host Cowtipper's Delight one night. We'll let you play all the trailer trash country the station can handle!

???Taylor great point, Clay says the target is woman 25-54 or 35-54 it seems to change evrytime Clay is quoted. So what is the format is it rock and country? And how does Rock+country+baseball=w 35-54?

That's cute, Tom.

Their "Last 10" list on the website shows they played "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.

Strike 2, Lance. Acoustic guitar does not a country song make.

This morning, they played "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac. Another song which doesn't seem to make sense with their format. Maybe tomorrow they'll play "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.

I hope Lance isn't adopting the "it's country because we say it's country" attitude. The listeners know the difference. It's similar to the attitude Lorrie Morgan had a few years ago when she wanted to release some big-band deal as a country album.

Driving around today I heard "American Pie." Since when is a song about the history of ROCK a country song? Don't get me wrong, I don't mind bringing in stuff that's not technically country so long as it fits the format, but in the past few days, all I can say to the Bull is:

Dude... ???

I didn't do a strict count on attendance and I don't know what percentage of clients (or potential clients) who were invited actually showed up. My guess is there were about 15 clients there, but most brought more than one person. And yes, there were a lot of Clear Channel sales folks floating around.

I heard Tom Petty and John Mellencamp too! The "Bull" is all over the place. They don't have any type of idenity yet.

I've heard them too and am a little puzzled. I really liked the mix of music, with a lot of country songs from recent years sprinkled in until they started this. Also, I doubt this was Lance's decision; I'll bet he was told to do this.

the station has been ruined. Rodney im with you...it DID sound good hearing some oldies-country sprinkled in = now w john mellencamp and lynyrd skynyrd and others its raunchy....and i bet they pull a 1 share 12 plus....its gonna be a tank...good luck sales folks trying to sell this on the street...sales manager and DOS better have new gigs lined up. PD will get promoted and sales kicked in the rear for not being able to sell THE BULL or whatever it is today.

But how is this so different from what Eagle does? I just don't see the hole, the abyss yes, does Atlanta really need a 5th country station?
