Roger Hedgecock To Be Afternoon Drivetime Host at KFWB?

They could do worse then Hedgecock.

But 18 hours of Dr. Laura for the launch? Bad idea. You want to whet the new listeners appetite for what's to come, not give them endless product to turn off. Having her anchor the station is a dicey proposition at best anyway. They should brand this as a new type of talk station (which of course it isn't) but making it the "Dr Laura and Friends" station where she is so much more prominently displayed is the type of bad decision making that will eventually cost folks their jobs.

I guess Tom Leykis is out of the question for the late afternoon slot. I don't think that his show would fit KFWB's talk format direction.

Doesn't Tom Leykis have a lot of material he uses on Dr Laura?

Good point, but didn't he used to go off on Rush in the years they were on KFI?

I do remember one show where all the KFI hosts were in the KFI studios doing a "gang" show and the riffs between Rush and Tom weren't that bad. No blood was spilled so I guess they got along, to a certain extent. :)

Still missing the e-motes. :'-(

if their not affiliated with rush limbaugh, o'reilly dr. laura or glen beck they can be counted out of the latest in the thousands of conservative U.S. talk radio stations better known now as KFWB. This station is now completely worthless, CBS will regret their decision

Amazing how CBS is paying Tom Leykis a boatload of $$$ and they won't put him back on the air. Sweet deal for Tom!

If I remember it was called "Meeting of the Minds". May have been Leykis' idea.

This kind of surprises me as I would not consider Roger big city fare. Just as Neal Boortz fizzled so will Roger. Many people here would have liked a local show with Larry Elder, a better choice for sure. The recently displaced John Ziegler would have been a better choice than Hedgecock, his edgy rants could have attracted the fans of John and Ken who prefer honesty in their screaming hosts. JZ could also attract the listeners who are turned off by the whiny nasal tones of Mr. Levin. If not local how about a delay of Glenn Beck, an important voice also displaced locally with the blow up of News Talk KGIL-1260. I can say nothing except bad decision by CBS management.

Don't underestimate Roger - I detest him, but the man is very smart, very ambitious and very good at reading an audience and adjusting his act. He had plenty of experience on the national stage when he was a regular substitute for Limbaugh and he could be a surprise.

Not underestimating Roger, just said he is not big city fare. I am neutral about him but I did like Neal Boortz and their styles work in San Diego and Atlanta but not LA. LA wants brash and bold thus the popularity of Handel and John and Ken. LA for the most part doesn't want thoughtful discourse but seems to prefer the loud and crude with a healthy dose of hyperbole. Larry Elder somehow bridged that gap of disparity and John Ziegler is certainly brash and loud so they should have been, in my eyes, most definitely looked at to fill the slot.

From the www.radio-info.com news page of Wed. 9/9/09, including details on who's filling in the other shifts:

L.A.'s KFWB (980), transitioning from all-news to mostly talk, adds Roger Hedgecock

The CBS station is polishing off its 18-hour Dr. Laura marathon at 6am local time, highlighting her addition to the noon-3pm shift at KFWB. Market manager Ed Krampf announces that last week’s speculation was correct: Roger Hedgecock will assume the “local” 3-6pm slot, beween Dr. Laura and Michael Smerconish. Also added to the KFWB lineup: Dave Ramsey, 9pm to midnight. Then Todd Schnitt for midnight to 3am.

What's surprising (alright, maybe not) is that KFWB is basically, outside of the two Lauras, a bunch of local hosts who got promoted in an era where every station needs more shows to replace their laid-off local hosts. I have no doubt Hedgecock, Schnitt, et al, do great local shows that connect with their markets, but to have them all over the country isn't their talent. And certainly not in LA. Dave Ramsey might have slightly better appeal since he talks about non-local issues, namely money, but can he play in LA? Neal Boortz plays better outside of the Bible belt and he failed, as we knew he would.

KFWB has all the earmarks of a 4th tier talk station. Like 870 and the former formats of 830 and 1260 they will be lucky to do a 1.0

I concur with Jon Bruce's sentiments that KFWB is not likely to see huge success with these second tier out-of-towner talkers. Frank Buckley bemoaned on the KTLA News at 1 Tuesday that Dr. Laura is billed as being on 18 hours straight on KFWB on its first day to launch the news-talk format. He sternly and rightfully mentioned twice about how can a city like LA get by with non-local and syndicated fare for so long with the amount of amazing talent residing in this town? Dr. Laura and ilk are not going to, I believe, help 980 do better than KRLA 870, KTLK 1150, and certainly not as well as KLSX 97.1 did during its more than a decade on air here in LA. I will safely declare that KFWB will perform better than the late News Talk 1260 KGIL, but much of that comes from its signal strength and heritage.

Solution - seek out talent right here in LA, and avoid the retreads. I do not think Larry Elder is a way to go, even though he would be live & local. If KFWB is scared of handing too much air time to grooming new talent, than create several weekend slots for testing and rotating in potential general talk hosts with the eye toward finding some of them who can be placed in a weekday slot for local general talk. I would also slot some replays of Glenn Beck in some weekend shifts for now, as GB is currently off the air in LA, yet he is one of the nation's premiere talkradio hosts.

Finally, the one really good under the radar show that KFWB has been airing now for several months - Doug Stephan's Good Day, appears to have been dumped. That show is actually an excellent national show, that deserves some love and promotion and air here in the City of the Angels.
