ROGER SCHULMAN DEPARTS WFLA

Say it ain't so !!!...

What's up with Don Richards also... I heard someone mentioning some other name as News Director the other day...

Again... so much for corporate radio giants... lets go back to more mom & pop operations...

What are the details of Roger's departure? I remember listening to him since his days at the Q Zoo. Really good news presenter, IMO. Whether his leaving WFLA was his own doing or otherwise, it would be a loss to the station.

Roger decided to jump ship and join Shayna Lance at WWBA.

Sounds like WWBA and WHBO are going to produce their own news instead of letting metro (clear channel) do it for them. Sounds like things are looking up. Now all WWBA needs is a nite signal again.

Metro is owned by Infinity... not Clear Channel.

Metro is owned by Westwood One... not Infinity.

Westwood One is owned by CBS Radio, formerly Infinity Broadcasting. So yes, Metro is owned by CBS Radio.

CBS Radio owns a portion of Westwood One stock but not a majority stake. CBS Radio is charged with managing Westwood One but doesn't "own" it.

It's all owned by Viacom.

Arrgh. All this talk of ownership is giving me flashbacks to that "Killer V of Doom" logo that Viacom used in the 70's and 80's . Anyway, Hal Lamb is now doing what Lance and Schulman were doing during morning drive at Clear Channel. Makes me wonder if anyone else will be jumping ship soon...

On the topic of ownership, who do you think owns the soul of John Hogan?

^^^You're assuming facts not in evidence with that question...

Losing Roger will be a blow to WFLA. Roger has worked long and well when it comes to building the right contacts. Often he gets called before anyone else. He also knows whom to call when everything hits the fan.

If Shayna and Roger can lay the foundation of a good news operation at WWBA that would be a good thing for the market, but still as those who followed WHNZ back in the day when they had a good operation know, it takes a combination of product and promotion if you're going to make a dent in the WFLA juggernaut.

A good product alone won't do it.

From Slapshot (1977)--
Denis Lemieux: "I want to know who own de Chiefs."
Joe McGrath: "Owns."
Lemieux: "Owns, owns."

I think Genesis would have been better off spending the money used in hiring Schulman and Lance to pick up another local talk host, an up and coming talent who could grow the station, someone a cut above Mark Larsen and Barney the Purple Dinosaur. Seems to me there's more immediate payoff in a self-promoting host than in a news department that will need to be promoted.

Interesting to hear what may have been Roger's last gasp on WFLA -- and after he departed -- a canned public service program apparently recently recorded regarding that old Liberty ship not-for-porfit group, aired last night (Saturday) till 8:57 p.m. on 970.
