Rogers job cuts

Layoffs seem to be a big fad in Canada these days. I went through it last year, in the media industry no less.

I thought Rogers just did a big round of layoffs in 2010. I thought this was a highly profitable company; do they have some unprofitable divisions?

Well, they had to rehire quite a few people to restore week-end news on City TV Toronto, plus all the staffing it takes to run the new CityNews channel.

Then you have the new Rogers Home security service...is that making any money for them? Or is it a flop? (Rogers Home monitoring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx3rjFfzXRE )

My best guess is that maybe Rogers is saving up big bucks in case Bell is granted the go ahead to own more than two AM or FM in a market.
The cuts would surely give Rogers deeper pockets to buy up just enough stations to bring them on par with what Bell would now own.
