Rome on vacation, so Animal listeners...

...are hearing LOCAL programming 12-3. Kinda stinks because JP Peterson was guest host last Friday (Animal had TKras instead). Question: if there is no 98.7 the Fan does this even happen? My gut tells me no and that this is a move not out of desperation per se but apparently the folks at Gandy can possibly see the writing on the wall...

It's possible that they are doing it because 98.7 is local around the clock, but even if that's the reason, I don't care. Rome may be a "bell cow" but when he is out there is little point in putting on his fill-ins.

I really enjoyed hearing Fenton on there earlier this week and I heard Krazniqi on last week too. It beats the hell out of whoever they'd have on there trying to do a Rome impersonation.

Interesting that they are using local talent. Imagine the network has someone sitting in for Rome. Never been a Rome fan, however, that's me.

Didn't Rome just announce he's jumping ship to CBS Sports come 01/01/13??? How will all this lay into things.. Locally and across the country???

Rome hasn't officially announced he's leaving but Radio-Info is reporting the rumor that he will jump to CBS in January. That would create a lot of interesting scenarios.

Rome jumped the shark years ago. Most of his good callers have left. And the ultimate slap in the face was this year, his "smack off" winner was some MMA meathead?

I have wished they would put someone local on in middays for years.

It looks like for the moment that CBS has 620 reacting to them, and losing the initiative is the prelude to losing the war. Speaking strictly as a listener, I lost my taste for Rome years ago and if there's a competent local host on 620 during that time period I would consider that a big win.

With broadcast rights to all the major sports teams Rays, Buccaneers, and Lightning, DAE is very much the leader. Haven't heard any "life" on the Fan as yet. Heard a guy on the weekend not being able to pronounce Boston's closer Alfredo Aceves' name. Step one is to tweak the audio. Step it up and inject some testosterone into it. You don't have to be music pure anymore. Don't see 620 reacting. See them tightning an already strong product. The weak link, in my opinion, is the 3 hours they throw away with Rome. Would much rather hear about the Bucs, Rays, and Lightning than the LA Lakers.

1) Rome was on vacation, and while I often find his fill-in hosts more entertaining it is in WDAE's best interest to counter the live and local programming on 98.7 with live and local themselves.

2)If/when Rome jumps to CBS it will mean he appears on 1010 AM, not 98.7, if that happens.

3)I agree that Rome's act dried up years ago, but he still has his followers. He'll probably draw higher numbers on 1010 than what his predecessor(s) did in that same slot because his listeners will find him.

4)Curious to see how WDAE handles a Rome defection to CBS... could give them the chance to give someone (likely one of those fill-ins getting a tryout) a local show.

Disagree on the first sentence. 620 is just doing something they probably should have done a while back. If 98.7 is the reason they are doing it, then so be it. It's still a good idea no matter why.

Agree on the second sentence, and I think Bobby Fenton could be that guy for them.

Fenton has been grossly underutilized since he left CBS for CC last year (?), and this would be an excellent way to exploit his talents. By the way, I know on another thread someone mentioned that Kraz and Night Train have the Triple Crown of TB Sports Talk. Shouldn't there be a third (Fenton)? I'll go back to that thread and check...

I'm sure it was mostly in response to 98.7...but Rome's fill ins are mostly from SoCal, and they are lacking in knowledge of many things east of the Coachella Valley.
