Rome Replaced?

Premiere sent out a note that a new show will air in Romes place beginning on January 2nd 2013

Any guesses? Will Premiere/CC allow any sports stations to go get him from CBS? Or will the new show be the only way they can go...

CC is probably looking to put someone in there as the fall guy for the first half of 2013. i.e. "you don't want to be the guy that replaces THE GUY but the guy that replaces the guy that replaces THE GUY.

no-one will replace jim rome unless they're desperate or have an ego that is completely unchecked. colin cowherd is the exception to the rule (ego aside). he replaced tony k. and to his credit; made listeners forget about tony after six months.

i imagine CC will see what the landscape looks like after certain contracts expire and the ESPN/NBC/CBS dust settles.

however in the meantime...

my guesses are complete wild cards:

1. Steve Mason & Jason Smith (recent demotion for Mason - gets out while John Ireland is tethered to the Lakers, Smith is a free agent (i think), history together)

2. Andy Roddick & some nameless pop culture cross-over person(s). (remember that co-host with Stephen A. Smith on FSR?, west coast morning zoo vibe)

3. Sports Today (some Sportscenter tonight rip-off, cheap in-house highlights, jt segment replays, other host blather, etc...)

This is a HUGE headache for Don Martin. And the first he's had to deal with in a long time...maybe the most critical hire he's ever had to make. (His suck up in the Dan Patrick annivesary press release yesterday is classic Martin...taking credit for a show he's never had anything to do with...but if DP goes to NBC, Don's completely screwed...)

If my math is right, Rome's show launched in 1996 which predates Mr. Martin's tenure at CC/LA and the network. Rome, again if my math is right, also predates the launch of Fox Sports Radio and the original team brought together by Andrew Ashwood in 2003. Inspite of some recent affiliate losses and audience erosion Don didn't want to have to be the guy to hire the guy that replaced Rome...and go up against Rome in some very big markets on some very big stations.

And if what I hear is correct, isn't Romie managed by the legendary Kraig Kitchin...who also manages Beck, Limbaugh, Handel and Delilah? So Don can't run to Kraig for help and guidance on this one can he? Or maybe Kraig's got someone in his hip pocket so he and his clients win coming and going? In the end I suspect Don will be told who to hire...by Premiere, by LA manager Greg Ashlock, and by a very powerful agent.

I've got one guess and if it plays out it would be devastiting to a lot of affiliates...PMS. I guess this is a good local show, but it is an awful national show.

In LA from 7p-10p, instead of Rob Dibble & Amy Van Dyken they've been having Jay Mohr working this slot. My guess is that Jay Mohr will replace Jim Rome in his timeslot and my other guess is that Pat O'Brien will replace Dan Patrick once he eventually makes the move to NBC Sports Radio. I think a big re-shuffle for FSR will happen in January. My guess would be.

This is Pacific Coast time.

6a-9a: Pat O'Brien
9a-12p: Jay Mohr
12p-4p: J.T. the Brick with Tomm Looney
4p-7p: Jason Smith
7p-10p: The Nick & Artie Show (Similar deal that FSR had with Dan Patrick)
10p-3a: Ben Maller
3a-6a: Jason Whitlock

I think Steve Hartman & Vic "The Brick" Jacobs along with Petros & Money will go back to be local L.A. sports radio from 12p-7p. ESPN LA 710 has been killing AM 570 FOX Sports LA in the ratings during drive-time, I feel a shake-up will happen at FSR nationally.

Mohr just started a "podcast network." He might not be interested in a daily radio show when he can act and do his schedule his podcast around his other jobs.

If News Corp is really planning to beef up its American sports presence with eventual U.S. versions of Fox Sports 1, 2, & 3 branding it uses internationally (along with added events on FX, Fox Sports Net, Fox College, etc.), I'd expect it to get a touch more serious about the sports radio network licensing the Fox Sports name.

It wouldn't totally surprise me if Fox wanted one of their talents getting that open midday slot, hyping its events and shows on Fox Sports platforms blatantly similar in line with how the ESPN empire does it. Curt Menefee? Matt Vasgersian? Gus Johnson? Mike Goldberg (via the UFC)?

Think Jay Mohr would get a TV simulcast on FSR? After all, everybody else (Dan Patrick, Tim Brando, Boomer and Carton) is doing it.

Well at least we know that Romes last "live" show on Premiere will be Friday, December 21.

But still no mention of a possible replacement and absolutely no rumors, buzz, or anything.

Only note is to stay tuned for an announcement?!?!?! Its December 18! Do they have someone and are keeping it on the down low (which is imopssible in todays age) or are they struggligng to find someone?

Can't complain... will be interesting to see how he handles the daily grind... but Premiere could have done a lot worse. I like the move

For entertainment potential alone, I'm not sure there was a better host to get. A true comedy talent who can tell great stories (if you've heard his 'Mohr Stories' podcast or his appearances on others). Oh, and he's a legit sports fan. Having an interesting Rolodex of celebrity friends won't hurt either.

FSR could make some noise with this show instead of simply being noise. As for 'the grind', Steve Harvey hasn't exactly slowed down with his projects.

Replaced by Jay Mohr, Rome moving to CBS Sports radio. Loosing some major markets in the move.
Other than LA. Rome didnt have a Full Power market covering station in NYC & Chicago that i know of to begin with. since the 2 sports stations in Chicago are WSCR which was local during Rome prior to his move to CBS. and WMVP carries ESPN and Local Talk themselves in the same Slot. NYC had WEPN with Local & ESPN and WFAN is all local. So Rome was banished to minor rimshots if lucky in NYC. with his move to CBS Radio. Rome could get those Chicago & NYC Clearances but lose his LA clearance at the same time

I don't think Rome has ever been on in Chicago, unless he was on a NW Indiana or outer-suburban Illinois station. WSCR has always been all-local, except for Yahoo/Sporting News/One-on-One on weekend overnights.

The only way CBS Sports Radio gets into Chicago is if (1) WSCR moves its local programming to FM, and puts the network on 670 as has been rumored for a couple of years, or (2) WLS dumps talk and takes the network. Cumulus distributes CBS Sports Radio and owns WLS, so I can't rule out that (slim) possibility.

Or, maybe on WIQI 101.1, if this article is accurate.
