Rome Stand-ins

Who is your favorite substitute pimp in the box?

It is definitely not Petros and $ that I know for sure, they are just plain awful and not sure why Jim would let them on his show. Is their act to really not like each other, I got that feeling today when they were talking about Cam Newton? Kind of made me uncomfortable.

Anyway, there are others that do a great job. Jay Mohr is pretty funny but he sometimes overdoes bits, like the CSI Miami one. The Sklar Brothers can be quite entertaining but sometimes they do that back and forth thing and it comes off as if they were a couple which would be weird being brothers and all. John Feinstein even did a passable job the couple of times he was host. Jim Lampley was very good with the guests and I would listen if he had a show. If Rome was going to be gone for a month, who would you pick? I think Jay could pull it off but would need a lot of work on the sports side.

Asking this question is like asking who you think would be a suitable stand-in for Rachel Maddow on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC (Which I think Jim Rome would make a most interesting & entertaining stand-in host of BTW ;D ).

Fortunately she has a slew of people she can count on (But even so, it'd still be interesting & entertaining to see Jim Rome stand in for her if ESPN would let him :) )

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

I really like Feinstein. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about.

If you have not read his book "A Good Walk Spoiled" do so. Very good read.

Jay Mohr hands down is the best "substitute pimp in the box"...I don't even listen to the other fill ins...when is the "Slam Man" going to get his own show would be my question...

Yes Jay can be a riot. The bit about Jordan's Hanes commercial is just awesome. That commercial came on not too long ago and even my wife thought it seemed a little off kilter. "Mmmmh hey buddy". So I have to agree Jay is probably number 1. I think Jay would need a partner for an everyday gig.

Rome has really had some funny stuff over the years. I actually had to pull over once during a "softball guy" bit because I was laughing so hard. I used to play a lot of softball so it made it 10X funny, especially the softball girlfriend reference. "Hey nice pop out" says other team, softball guys reply :"yeah but I am hitting .789 with these guns, I bet you can't beat that". So silly but spot on.

Without even hearing a single second of Mohr's "CSI: Miami" bit... it involves a lot of plays of the guitar sting from The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," doesn't it?

As far as Petros & Money guest hosting is concerned... it might be a contractual (FSR) thing?

The Sklar brothers for sure! Lampley is good, Feinstein is a snooze fest no matter where he's broadcasting, Jay Mohrseems like he's auditioning for the rumored CBS show about a sports talk host or the next incarnation of "Gary unmarried", Petros & Money - forget about it! no way! The Sklars are funny and mix in a blend of sports and non sports talk and plus you know it's for just a day or 2 so you're ok with it.

They started being substitute PITBs before the FSR/KLAC merger that syndicated inflicted their local show nationally. I want to say it was in 2008 or so... shortly after they first teamed up OTA. Petros and Matt still promote themselves as a KLAC show that just so happens to by syndicated, ergo, "SuperStation KLAC."

Andrew Siciliano obviously did the same thing, but it was probably out of coincidence given his then-FSR duties (he started being a substitute PITB while still a sidekick on Bruno/Van Earl/Stein... obviously waaaay before he hosted "Gametime Live").

I think you can get too much Jay Mohr. I would say Finestein if I were listening for a week of subs.

I agree about Jay. I also remember the softball guy bit. That had to be one of the funniest moments in the history of the show.
