Romper Room

The original WHDH-TV (Channel 5/Boston) ran "Romper Room" (in color) from the mid 1960's until Friday, March 17th, 1972 (two days prior to the station losing its' license on 3/19/72). It was hosted by "Miss Jean" Harrington, at that time married to Channel 5 reporter Bill Harrington. Bill moved over to WCVB-TV (the NEW Channel 5), when that station began operations at 3:00 AM, Sunday, March 19th, 1972. "Miss Jean" did not make the move to WCVB-TV after the change. WCVB opted to use the generic syndicated Claster version instead.

I worked at two stations that ran Romper Room. WKTV in Utica ran the syndicated version. WOKR Rochester(now WHAM-TV) had local talent.
The show was owned by the same company that syndicated Bowling For Dollars which WOKR, also, ran

I remember WOKR and Romper Room in the early and mid 60s (I detested the program- was just a little too old I guess- but my younger sister absolutely loved it, as did my mother) with "Miss Rita"- who was, at the time, Rita Kimble, who did it for years and years. Since then, I lost track, and had no idea it was still around.

I also had no idea that there was a generic national version. However, it couldn't have been as good- the Romper Rooms I remember had a good quantity of local references that a national version couldn't have pulled off.

Franchises usually do have local flavor.

I watched the Atlanta version when WXIA Channel 11 (WAII back then) was running Romper Room. Miss Sally scared me one day over at my cousin's when I covered my face and she said, "Don't cover your face." I was too small to understand she really couldn't see into the room. Stone Mountain was one of the sponsors for Romper Room and had a very musical catchy promo they ran during the show (not during the commercials). They had a Do Bee in our version too. I can still remember the music they played when he entered the room.

as a teenager I had a friend whose older brother was dating the teacher from the local version of Romper Room. (that sent pubescent male conversations into areas where it really would be better off not to go  )

If they had a new version out today it'd have to be called "Ritalin Room" with a metal detector at the door & frequent visits by "Mr. Security Guard".
hmmmm...would make for a good SNL skit!

Did Romper Room air on WSBK TV-38 after it left Channel 5? I have memories of it but I thought that it was on 38 in the mid 70s.

If it was made into an SNL skit, it would inevitably be over-written, over-acted, 4 minutes too long, and really boring.
