Ron Chapman fills in for Paul Harvey?!?

Im curious, did paul ever sign one of those Marvin Zendler-style lifetime contracts? Id think he'd be retired by now.

Ron is definitely retired from CBS...Citadel/ABC Radio owns Paul Harvey's show so this is just fill in...

Does anyone have any info on what's happened to Paul Harvey? He's been off the air for a very long time. Is he ill?

According to his bio, he'll be 90 in September. Clearly, no one can go on forever.

Also, are there any updates on his beloved Angel ?

just found this in the news..... apparently it's him who's been ill (with pneumonia.... a common
condition for the advanced aged )

Filling in for Paul Harvey tomorrow - Mitt Romney

The former Massachusetts Governor and recent Republican presidential candidate will "bring his unique views as both a politician and business leader to the microphone" - and will be getting up extra early, to handle that first Paul Harvey show, as well as the "midday visit." ABC Radio Networks says former KVIL/KLUV, Dallas personality Ron Chapman will still handle the bulk of the fill-ins for Paul Harvey - whom it says is due for cataract surgery, after recovering from pneumonia. Harvey's an amazing 89 years old, and is now scheduled to return to his usual Chicago-based microphone on Friday, April 25.

Sure, I'd answer the call to fill in for Paul any day. Any of us would. Ron did, and I don't blame him. I just can't see how he got on the short list.

Who made that call, and why? Bottom line is he is not a radio journalist. He has no newsworthy credentials or credibility. He sounded nervous dancing around that death story. He was in unfarmilliar territory, without the "What's this world commin' to" jingle to punch. Otherwise he was just Ron. Love him or hate him.

If they were looking for a D/FW talent to fill in, there is plenty of talent at the Harvey affiliate, WBAP to pick from. Matter of fact, if I were a station veteran of WBAP, or an ABC anchor waiting in the wings to get THAT shot I'd be pretty P-O'd about now.

I think Ron would agree, but he's warming up for the :15 minute feed.

On a lighter note, if you would like to see what Paul Harvey's studio looked like about 15 years ago, follow this link: http://www.joeholstead.com/photoalbum.html
THOSE PICTURES ARE GREAT -- ESPECIALLY THE ONE OF THE GUY RIDING PAUL'S HARLEY

Back when I worked at ABC about 10 years ago, there was an inside joke that Paul actually died long ago and that his son with the similar voice (Paul Jr.?) has been doing the show ever since. Since ABC knows it stands to lose tons of affiliates that only carry the network for the Harvey program, it's probably not too far off base.

OH PLEASE!!! Jr's voice is NO where near his Dad's......hell I could do a better imitation....Ron Chapman is better on the read than PH Jr.......(hmmm I worked for ABC 10 yrs ago as well)

Agreed. Paul Jr. has a similar sounding voice but not the delivery Paul Sr. brings. No way that could be pulled off.

The joke around these parts is that Paul Sr's every word is being digitized into a huge database that will someday electronically deliver news and comment and the rest of the story long after Paul turns into plant food.

Ron's OK but still sounds very much to me like he's imitating Paul's delivery.

Ron should just be Ron.

I listened to Ron last week and he seemed to be himself, and I thought he sounded excellent!

... and I saw him in the hall at ABC and he really seemed to be enjoying himself. More power to him, he deserves a little "icing on the cake", if you will.

I would agree with you on Ron being one of the better subs since Joe Holstead! It's a good fit for Ron!

and by the way....hello Mr. Eberhart! Long time, my friend! ;)

Let's grab lunch and catch up brotha!

Well it's happened again........... the 'elder' HARVEY seems to have dissappeared - again.

It's been about two weeks since he was on, and i heard his last broadcast. His delivery
was so slow, and voice so weak and frail, it was sad to listen to. Barely got thru it.

As always, ABC/Citadel isn't talking. I guess no ones supposed to notice.

Of course, he'd only been on 2-3 times per week for the last year.

RIP

Paul Harvey is a LEGEND in broadcasting. He's been on radio forever. All good things come to an end. He's been goin down hill since his wife passed. Can't blame the man.
