Ron & Don - "#1 Talk Show In Seattle?" Really?

I have heard one of them (Ron or Don, I don't know which one) say that they are "THE #1 talk show in Seattle." Numerous times. They said NOT in their time slot, but in Seattle---period. REALLY?

I don't have access to the breakdown in ratings and demos, but can someone offer some proof? Yes, I understand that they say they are "the #1 rated talk show in Seattle" --- with Men 55+ or Women 65+ or some small demo---but to just say they THE number one show and not really be in either 12+ or the money demos is really bush-league.

They have higher ratings than RUSH Limbaugh? With the advent of PPM? Hard to believe. But if it's true, I would just love to see the data.

They have a great show. I live in Chicago and can't get half as good talk radio that discusses relevant news items the way they do. I normally skip the Seattle stuff, but their takes on national interests is very interesting.

I'm not asking if the show is "good" or not. I'm asking for verification to their continuing claim.

urghh, I hate when people say "we're #1". Of course you are! Everyone is #1 in something. I think good ol R&D are talking about how they were technically the #1 rated "talk show" if you pull a 12+ ranker for the January monthly. God knows that us folks in sales get 12+ share RFP's all the time! If you look at the areas where R&D should care about being #1, namely men and Adults, they might be the #1 talk show but not #1 overall. I've highlighted the #1 "talk shows" with certain rankers from the January monthly below:

In reviewing the past three books, I don't see anywhere that KIRO is number one in PMD. It breaks down pretty much to what the last poster..posted.

There isn't anything that limits air talent (by title only), from saying that they're number one. Number one in their own minds perhaps? And really, has anyone increased cume and TSL by claiming to be number one? Not that I've ever heard of anyway.

i know! Perhaps it's one of those; 'if you wish for something, it will happen' power of positive thinking thing!

Thank you for this verification. And I was thinking the same thing. There is nothing in this day and age from saying "We're #1" because we have tossed integrity right out the window. I supposed if Don says it often enough, he and other people will believe. it.

But maybe karma delivered a blow to Ron when he doubled over sick during the hour's first show today? Yep, it's a bitch!

I don't have specific ratings but I am pretty sure the number one talk shows in Seattle are both AM Drive shows on FM. Those would be BJ Shea and Bob Rivers. Since both are on rock radio stations many do not classify these as "talk shows" but both do nothing but talk for four plus hours a morning and both get big numbers in both the prime demos and in billing.

And I am the number one LPFM morning guy in eastern Lewis and western Grays Harbor counties. SEE, if you get to define your own terms, EVERYBODY gets to be number one. ;)

I heard Don talking about the suicide of his ex girlfriend today in the 4:00 hour. I have not listened to this show much but I would like to commend him on dealing with a issue very close to his heart in a way few others in our medium would. Most times I have tuned in before I hear a guy that I percieve to be pretty full of himself but that was not the case today.
Sorry for your loss dude and kudos for speaking from the heart on the public airwaves. That, by the way, is what most great #1 talk shows tend to do alot of.

Number one or not...R/D on many days is just plain exhausting to listen to. I wish KIRO would get it together. Pull Barney Rubble out of noon-3p and take R/D into early P.M. I dont yearn for the good ol' days of Bonneville but fer gawd sakes put some real radio back into that operation...somebody...please..!

WW - Good post. Over the years it's been painful to listen to KIRO shed class. I get corporate stuff, revenue and all that but every good-sized market needs a full-service talk station that reflects the market. As you say - listening these days is tiring.

Ron and Don have the perfect timeslot, the drive-home time. Don likes to boast it; especially when commenting about his fellow radio hosts (ie. Monson). Ron and Don are fortunate. The average drive home is probably about an hour. Enough time for the average listener to tune into their antics and turn off the radio. That listener, unfortunately I am not average but a talk radio junky, doesn't have to listen to the rest of the four hours of re-runs and repeats. Don's other calling card is being the 'hardest working radio hosts' at KIRO since he and Ron put in a four hour day. Don often ignores the fact that he and Ron repeat the first two hours over the next two hours; sometimes (almost always) using recordings from the previous hours. Add to the disussion that Frank Shiers has a four hour show and he hardly ever repeats a previous segment. If Frank does, he never uses recordings.

akaf - Shiers may never use recordings but to me, he SOUNDS like a recording.

the few times I've listened to R&D I've also noticed LOTS of repeats. I rarely do it on the air. Even when PDs suggested it, I've resisted. A 4 hour air shift just ain't that hard. No need to repeat unless you're out ill or a vacation, etc.

Lazy.

Who do we contact to tell them to keep Marty and Jodi on. Thousand times better listening to them instead of Don's rantings and interuptings and and and. Maybe even keep Ron with Marty and Jodi. I used to like listening to them, but Don's just gotten too much.

Radio 101...it's called recycling, look into it. Unfortunately we are talking about R&D here, so they are recycling stuff that wasn't very entertaining the first go round!

Four hours? No, you got that wrong. Most hosts spend hours of prep time on and off the clock. Unfortunately, we are still talking about R&D here, so it's all for naught when talent is void!

I'm just so sick of KIRO in general. How R&D have ratings and keep their jobs blows my mind.

Ron and Don are good guys, talented and often entertaining and thought provoking. But..Dammitt, they wear me out just trying to listen to them some days. Ron's 5 paragraph long speeches (without breathing) and Don's frequent bouts of just going mental on some subject of the moment make it hard to keep your hand away from the buttons. Don poking fun at Rons opinions used to be fun but its just become, at times, uncomfortable to listen to. AS well, when one of them is out (frequent it seems) it becomes a disjointed sounding one man show. A stereophonic broadcast with one channel out..I don't know if having a "#1 talk show" on a station thats consistantly showing rateings every month in the mid teens is such a great thing or not..Maybe its like sitting on the stern of the Titanic..?

Wino - Good post. My schedule has changed so I don't listen to KIRO as much but the few times I scan them in the afternoon, you're right - one of R&D is often out. I don't hate what they do - I don't hate Doris Monson and I get on her all the time - but here are a few things that really annoy.

Is it Don with the deep voice? That endless growling gets tiresome. I prefer a more natural sounding delivery. And during interviews, someone he's talking to will give a long, thoughtful response and he cuts them off with a dismissive "uh-huh" before going on to HIS yakking. I think it's more a nervous tic than anything but annoying nonetheless. Do they still do the rhyming thing at the top of every hour? If anything on Seattle sounds like Butte, Montana radio - that would be it.

The station is the audio equivalent of a boat taking on water. Not sure if they'll sink or float but they are definitely floundering.
