RON ENGELMAN DEAD

M

Died of lung cancer on August 29 at age 68. He was half of the "London and Engelman" morning show on KLIF in 1979. I believe this is the same guy who went off the deep end with commentary on the Branch Davidians and some rather subversive opinions on his 1990s talk show on the west coast.

Ron was originally a newsman at KLIF in the early 70's...and a pretty good one. He ended up doing news on John London's show and the two left KLIF in 1974 to go to KIMN in Denver and did a team show "London & Engleman"...they were brought back to KLIF in 1979 in one of their many resurrection plans and ended up in San Francisco after that with a long and successful run in morning radio out there...
After that fizzled out, Engleman did return to Dallas and host a midday talk show on the 1190 frequency long after it was KLIF...this was during the Branch Davidian event in Waco and one of his claims to fame was defending the Branch Davidians for the rights and on one occasion was being listened to by the people inside the compound. He eventually went down to Waco and did his show and tried to get in without luck. On one show Ron would say something like "...if you guys are listening, make the satellite dish move..." and it would. They were listening to him. He was really "out there" at times. I recall the authorities were less than pleased with Ron Engleman regarding all of this and his show was cancelled shortly after all of that.
Where his career took him after that, I wouldn't know.

Well let me see if I can fill in some of the spaces here... Ron worked for KGBS 1190 in 1992 through 1993... he was the mid-day talk show host--- coming on after Morton Downey Jr.

He was indeed on the air with the Branch Davidians during the stand off-- and every day he was on the air, he would talk about consitutional rights and such- and his wanting to get inside the compoud with a doctor was a complete joke. The "DOCTOR" was a foot doctor, and the guys that went down there in the van were on the phone with me back at the station-- giving them instructions on how to get out of Downtown Dallas, to go to Waco... (I have to laugh about it 14 years later).. Ron was removed after Don Walker was fired as GM, and Tom Scott was removed as PD. All this was done with in days of most of the staff being let go on orders from Mike Russell (owner of the station) and Morton Downey Jr. (Vice Pres. of Programming) who were in charge of Greystone Broadcasting (hence the call letters KGBS).

I will say this about Ron, I did hear him on overnights in a syndicated show while I was working in East Texas, and his set up was based in New Mexico or Arizona (I can't recall) but it was bascially out of his house!

I did enjoy playing golf with Ron, he was one hellva joke teller, and all the stuff you heard on the air, if you wish to know the truth about it.. was more about PUBLICITY of the 1190 station than his belief.. .he really worked the machine that could make PR work in your favor... he makes you remember him and the station, even if it is at times in not so great of light!

Just a thought

Just a quick note on the passing of Ron Engleman. When Ron came to Dallas in '93 looking for a spot at talk radio KGBS, I was a bit hesitant having followed Ron's career on the West Coast. Could he make the transition? His familiarity with and former standing in the Dallas/Ft. Worth market added to my decision to give it a shot. As for the Branch Dividian story, with ratings being the name of the game, KGBS went with the story when other stations dropped it. Ron had an inside line with David Koresh and yes there was communication with but no backing of David Koresh. As for bringing doctors to Waco, there is an underlying story here as well. A secret really, known then to only 3 people. Koresh, Engleman and myself. It made no difference as to what ranking the doctors had, be it foot or brain it was just a matter of getting them and us inside the complex. As I mentioned, the underlying story was the real reason and I promised Ron after Koresh's demise that I would never reveal the "whole" story. However, it could well have changed the entire course of what happened at Waco and may well have stopped what happened with no further injury or ultimate loss of life. Unfortunately the government didn't see it that way. At least, those in command in Waco. I may consider revealing the "rest of the story" as Paul Harvey would say if this reply draws any response or curiosity. Let's face it, Waco was then and this is now...14 years later. Who is still interested?

Food for thought...

I would love to hear the rest of the story. That whole incident was brought me into the world of talk radio as a listener and opened my eyes politically. No longer one of the sheep as he might say. ;D

Last I had heard of him was on an internet station doing deep nights 7 or 8 years ago.

Hello...for those interested in the secret of the Waco incident, it will be posted very shortly. Be looking for it. I just hope everyone who reads it has an open mind. If you are a onesider...i.e. the Government can do no wrong...or, the Government can do nothing right, you may want to skip this one. For those with an open mind it may just bring you up to date and fill in some of the gaps in the stories from both sides.

Now, what some of you have been waiting for. But first let me say, that I had done a rough draft before I posted this and it turned out to be a 2 page dissertation that would most likely have made for some boring reading for those who know most of the whole story. So, I have cut it drastically and will try to get right to the point. I preface this however by saying that there are some who believe the government can do no wrong. Then, there are those who believe just the opposite that the government can do no right. Then there are those of us who absorb with an open mind. For those taking sides, this may not be for you, because you wouldn't believe anything I say anyway. I'll preface that with "I couldn't care less." So let's get on with it. When David Koresh asked Ron Engleman to try and get a doctor into the complex to evaluate and take care of those who had been wounded, it was handled by both Ron and myself with skeptism. And might I add here, I despise those in the media who called the Waco home of the Branch Dividians a "Compound". That indicates to me a reinforced structure designed to keep out intruders. It was anything but, made of the simplest of means with mostly plywood that burned like a matchbook on that fateful final day. The only reinforced structure was the bunker inside the complex where Koresh met his doom. That was where he stored his weapons and ammunition, quite like some hunters today. About the only thing that had to worry about guns and ammunition was the next deer he saw that should have been looking over it's shoulder. As for the doctors, they formed a twofold purpose after much discussion between Ron and Koresh. This all took place while Koresh's cell phone was still working before the government jammed the signal. Ron and I agreed that Koresh was being honest, based solely on the fact that he'd kept his word before. I strongly feel that Koresh was looking for a way out but didn't quite know how to go about it. It was quite obvious however when the bed sheet was thrown out the tower window what he wanted. By then, everyone knew he wanted doctors to come into the complex. As for the doctors, I don't care if they were podiatrists or brain surgeons, they all start the same way. You first have to learn the basics before you can get that MD behind your name. i.e. you must learn to bandage a boo-boo before you can deliver a baby. Neither makes you a trauma surgeon nor an obstetritian. So, the specialty of the doctors was a moot point. They wanted to help because they were concerned with the welfare of those inside, mostly the children as Ron was. When Ron and I went to Waco that day, the doctors were not allowed in because they didn't have media credentials. The perfect excuse I guess as the government knew why they were there. Now what you don't know. Remember I said the doctors had a twofold purpose? And this is something that we decided to keep quiet to quell any anger that may have come from either side of those watching the proceedings, but also so as not to give false hope to those inside the complex. Koresh didn't tell them what his plan was so if it fell through they wouldn't be dissappointed. We all know how it turned out. But the "secret" lies here. Koresh told Ron that if he were allowed to enter the complex with the doctors, he felt that would stem anything stupid from being done by the government, knowing there were outsiders inside. Then, and here's what you don't know, Koresh promised he would leave the complex with his followers and surrender peacefully. It's my feeling that by now the government was in too deep and had already made too many mistakes to allow that to happen. That was the denial for the doctors to accompany us. I'm not passing judgement nor am I assessing blame. At this point in time, 14 years later it's still anybody's story. No evidence left to support either side, just a concrete foundation for people to ponder..."what if." For those of you who believe this, it's as I know it. For those who don't, maybe you know more than I do and should write your own scenario. But, now that Koresh and Ron are both gone, I felt it was a story that should be told, because that day could have ended what turned out to be a tragic event in American history. But now, 14 years later I don't feel it'll ruffle too many feathers. So be it...now go smell a flower, we're only here for a short while. Respectfully...
Tom Scott
