Ron Lundy (1935 - 2010)

It was reported on the other board that Ron Lundy, on-air personality at WABC-AM (MusicRadio77) and WCBS-FM had passed away after a long illness. He was 75.

My condolences to his family. The man was a radio legend. May he rest in peace :(

As Ron would say at the end of his show, "I hope you all had a good time!" We did Ron, we sure did. (raises glass) :(

Truly a sad day. But think about it. Rock-N-Roll Heaven has now welecomed another great DJ to grace it's airwaves forever more. As for now, we can only imagine what that sounds like in our dreams. Condolences to Shirley and the Lundy family.

I never knew Ron but as an aspiring DJ; I have studied radio for many years. Rest in peace Ron. My thoughts and prayers are with The Lundy family.

I remember listening to Ron as a child growing up in N.Y. Listening to Ron and all the other greats that were working in the area at the time fueled my passion for radio. He will be missed.

:( Heartbroken!! I had the pleasure of meeting Ron before he retired, we did speak on the phone. He always was so nice to me and his Hello Luv would make me smile!!

He will not be forgotten, but he will be missed. I grew up with him in the 60's with that little radio always I had to hide. LOL I have memories of him. Goodbye to the Legend of "The Greatest City of the World"

I pulled out my worn copy of Rick Sklar's book "Rockin' America" to find out how he hired Ron for WABC.

According to the book, Rick had just fired mid-day host Bob Dayton for editorializing after a commercial. He decided to check the same station that "spawned" Dan Ingram, WIL in St. Louis. That's where he found Ron Lundy.

On page 173 Sklar describes a contest where he offered a prize to any listener who could float the most seaworthy boat in the pool of the new Loews City Squire Motor Inn. "Lundy volunteered to splash around in the pool until he sank all but one of them. Thousands of ships went under water in minutes. Then we had to jump in to save Lundy. He was too embarrassed to tell us he couldn't swim."

Of course, it was Ron's voice that was used in the multi-oscar winning movie, "Midnight Cowboy", as Jon Voight's character rolls into NYC with WABC in his ear. Great radio moment in film.

I can't tell anyone how much Ron Lundy meant to me as a radio listener and later as someone who worked in radio. In 1994, I started to tape CBS FM on Saturday morning because I knew that what was on the air would not last forever as all good things come to an end. Tonight I started to pour thru those tapes and everything came back to me about CBS FM in those days. It was special appointment radio. RIP Mr. Lundy.

Definitely one of the greats. I never met him, however what aspiring dj in those early years did not hear of Ron Lundy and 77 WABC. Rock 'N Roll 4ever!

A true one of a kind performer. When they made Ron Lundy, they broke the mold.

And the thousands of young DJ's who were influenced by listening to him, whether on WABC or CBS-FM all say "thanks" for having shown them how it's supposed to be done.

My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I'd like to say, there was no other memorable voice to come out of WABC, but they were all so great! Ron's "Hello Luv!" was a trade mark of New York radio for almost 30 years. He will surely be missed. If heaven has a radio station, it's got one hell of a lineup now. Good bye Ron. We'll miss you. My condolences to the entire Lundy family. He was definitely one of the inspirations for me getting into radio.

... 11pm ET on Sunday night 3/21/10 on WCBS-FM: the last hour of Ron Lundy's last show on WCBS-FM in 1997 will be rebroadcast.

The other New York radio board has a link where you can hear his entire final show on CBS-FM.
