when I was a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's in New York, WABC MusicRadio 77 was THE radio station that we ALL listened to - NOT JUST for the music, but for the LEGENDARY personalities - Harry Harrison, HOA, Big Dan Ingram, Liz Kiley, Marc Sommers, George Michael...and then there was the "Wil Child" from St. Louis, Ron Lundy - his "Hello, luv, it's 10AM in the GREATEST city in the world" - when you heard that, you knew, you just knew...there was MAGIC on the radio....when Ron came to NY in 1965 from St. Louis, he brought ALL that Southern charm with him - and we loved him for it....whether it was with listeners or other radio personalities, he was about as down-to-earth as you could get....and we KNEW it....when WABC MusicRadio 77 got "talked" in May 1982, we thought that it would be the LAST we hear of this Southern boy...
Thank GOD I was wrong...in 1984, a little station called WCBS-FM hired Ron to be the midday DJ - the ad in the Daily News at that time was labeled "Back to Back" (with Harry Harrison) - and so it was...he was as charming and sweet as we remember....when WCBSFM had its 15th Anniversary Concert in 1987 at Radio City - Ron and I stood outside Radio City Music Hall talking about banks and banking (I was working for Chase at the time) - in 1997, CBSFM's 25th Anniversary at the Museum of Broadcasting - FIRST thing Ron Lundy asked me was how the bank was...that's the kind of MENSCH Ron Lundy was....
Tonight, I cry...not just for the LEGEND that was MusicRadio 77 WABC, but for a Southerner named Ron Lundy - RIP, Ron....
