Ron Santo Has Died

'GN is reportedly beginning an edition of Sports Central in about 25 minutes dedicated to Santo.

I've spent the last decade listening to Cub games on WGN, and I liked Santo. He was a tell it like it is kind of guy, and you knew if the Cubs were winning or losing without hearing Pat Hughes giving out the score because Santo would be very excited or a little upset. He will be missed because of what he did on and off the field. He represented the Cubs organization well.

Very well indeed. Listening to him and Pat almost every day for six months during the times work prevented me from watching games, they almost become a part of the family. Terrible loss. WGN's tribute has been excellent so far. RIP Ronnie.

I have the CD, The Pat & Ron Show from WGN Radio. There's never any doubt who they're rooting for! I never lived in Chicago but if I did, I probably would've been a Cubs' fan and listened to Pat & Ron every day. Ron Santo articulated the trials and tribulations of every Cubs' fan. Too bad he never made the MLB Hall of Fame. RIP, Ron. Baseball fans everywhere will miss you! :(

There's always a chance he can make the Hall of Fame posthumously - although I'm sure we'd all be in agreement that it would have been better had he been alive to experience it.

How neat would it be if he were inducted into both baseball and radio's halls of fame next year.

The fact that he's not in the HOF based purely on what he did on the field is a travesty in and of itself.

The fact that he accomplished what he did, in light of what largely kept to himself, and also in light of the example he set for people dealing with adversity makes his absence from Cooperstown one the of grossest injustices imaginable. Today alone, Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster called him the strongest man he ever met, and onetime Cubs broadcaster Thom Brenneman called him the toughest man he ever met.

No less than Ernie Banks himself once remarked that it was Santo who was as deserving as anyone of the title "Mr. Cub".

And then there are thousands who benefited from the $40M he helped raise for JDRF. And the countless others who gained hope, comfort, and inspiration from his courage and determination.

Well done and RIP #10.

It would be fitting on his tombstone, "I Loved: Life, Family, Friends.....AND BASEBALL"... His passion for the game, his team and the overall world of baseball... I actually felt tears earlier today.. They (the Cubs) might be our rivals on the field, but they are those rascals cousins we really love to hang and spar with... "Cardinal Fan", "Baseball Fan" but more so, a "SANTO FAN"...

R.I.P....

A true loss to the Baseball World and especially Cubs fans from all around the world. There was some great Cubs Baseball watching in the 60's and 70's that will never be matched. RIP Ron Santo one of the BEST 3rd baseman baseball ever had the pleasure to have.
