Supposedly Ron Stone, the legendary anchor of KPRC-TV, is gravely ill with complications from Brain Cancer. I tried to find some info on click2houuston.com, but could not find any. But, I have heard from many people that it is not a good situation. He's been gone from KPRC for quite a few years, but he has done a lot of commercials, as well as writing a column for a Fort Bend publication. I will post any details as they become available.
 
MAN I hate to hear that......Ron also did the series "The Eyes of Texas" which was syndicated (like Texas Country Reporter)..I lost a high school friend to brain cancer..Please keep us up to date if you find anything...this is the 1st I have heard of it...
 
It's true

Ron Stone is in the final stages of his fight with cancer. I've been in contact with one of Ron's sons at Stone Films, and he confirmed his father's illness. Here's part of Billy Stone's response to me today.

"I am afraid the news is correct. He has entered home hospice after a long fight with cancer. I think we are close to the end of the fight, but he has handled this with dignity and courage, and the family is doing well."

I've known Ron for many years and words can't describe how saddened I am to learn of this. I think I can say without fear of being contradicted that Ron is the single most most loved and respected local news anchor this town has ever had. He's a Houston institution and this town won't be the same without him.

I am really sorry to hear that.....I will pass the news along to a friend of mine and a former coanchor with Ron, George Sells who is in Baton Rouge now. I KNOW he will be hit hard by the news...he always talked highly of Ron...

This is very sad to hear. I never knew Ron but always respected his work and when he was still on 2, that was my station for TV news. He was one of many fine journalists to come through Ray Miller's shop over there and Miller is perhaps the only Houston TV journalist for whom I would profess greater respect.

Strange that there's been no mention on any of the TV newscasts.

I don't think Ron & the current KPRC regime have been on the best of terms. Also, Post-Newsweek is really guarded when it comes to personal information. I am not saying either one of those is an excuse, given Ron's reputation in the market, but it is just a little personal information. I remember when I was in San Antonio, I was at KENS and a friend of mine was at KSAT. He told me that the station was freaking out because their main female anchor (Ursula Pari) was dating the main anchor at (then) KMOL (now WOAI-TV and Randy Beamer). Beamer mentioned it on-air a couple of times, but no mention has ever been made about it on KSAT. They are married now and I don't know if it even mention's Randy's name on the KSAT website. Not that this sadness compares to that, but to give a little perspective on P-N's philosophy.

The other thing is that I'm not sure of this, I don't know the Stone family, but if Ron were my father, I'd probably ask KPRC to keep things low-key until he passes. There is no sense in getting the entire city involved right now, when there is nothing they can do about it. I am sure the family wants as much privacy as possible during their remaining time together. When he does pass, you'll probably see moving tributes on all the stations and throughout the city. I know KRIV has an obit package ready to go, that's how I found out about Ron being gravely ill.

I'm sure that's true, but when Billy Stone confirmed the rumors for me, I then asked if they would mind me putting the news on this message board.

I said I wouldn't if the family preferred to keep it private, but Billy said they have no objection to letting people know what's going on.
