Ronnie Duncan - the next Howie Chizek? On WERE?

The PD finally ran a story today on WERE AM-1300's impending switch from brokered programming to urban talk, written by Julie E. Washington.

http://www.cleveland.com/entertainm...ase/entertainment/1133515841142760.xml&coll=2

Here it is (buried under, among other things, the ouster of Jim Meltzer from CC):

================================

New year, new format

WERE AM/1300 switches from paid programming to an "Urban Talk" format on Monday, Jan. 16.

The "Urban Talk" format will be heard from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and is geared toward black audiences, said David Bevins, general manager of Radio One Cleveland.

Radio One, the corporate parent of WERE, is still deciding on the schedule of shows that will be heard on Radio One stations carrying the "Urban Talk" format, he said.

The format switch includes a locally based morning show offering news, traffic, sports and weather to WERE listeners. The station is auditioning candidates, who can choose to host an hourlong practice session as part of their tryouts.

================================

Oddly, there is no mention of future hosts Rev. Al Sharpton (1p-4p) and Doug and Ryan Stewart (4p-7p) - aka the "2 Live Stews" - in the article. Only the 10a-1p slot is TBA.

But here's where it gets interesting...

I was scanning the dial shortly after reading the article, and ***just*** caught the last two minutes of an audition by Ronnie Duncan on WERE. Apparently, he hosted the 10:00AM hour, as WERE seems to be completely clearing out their schedule now.

Personally, I'd give Ronnie the edge. He has past on-air experience in the market on WOIO/WUAB and WKNR AM-1220 (the latter in late 1997, just before Jacor took over and installed Kendall Lewis in that same late morning slot).

(Oh, and the Howie Chizek comparison? Well, in the 1980's, Howie was once both a talk show host at WNIR FM-100.1 and PA announcer for the Cavaliers. The latter Ronnie took over starting this season...)

The thing I like is that WERE will actually have a LOCAL show in the morning. Even though the news, sports traffic and weather may come from Metro, this is a sign of confidence that Salem will never give to either WHK or WKNR...

I *was* going to jump all over you for the juxtaposed and highly incendiary subject line, seemingly equating the famed "Mr. Schzeiak" (Howie) with Ronnie Duncan. But you wrapped it up quite well.

I still don't care much for Duncan, but that's personal favor only.

I agree with your comments about Radio One's local commitment...which IS more than can be said for Salem. You hear that Mickey L.???

Well.....I dunno about on the radio, but I do know that Ronnie is not even in the same building when it comes to comparing him to Howie's PA announcing. Its not a knock on Ronnie....I just think Howie was damn good. Besides Joe Tait, I think one of my fondest memories growing up and listening to Cavs games was hearing Howie boom out the players names after shots.....

Craig AhhhhhEEEEEEELLLOOOOOOO for THAAAAARREEEEEEEE

Okay, got that out of my system, I'm done.<P ID="signature">______________

Glad you did it, though. I haven't heard Ronnie at the games, but I was sad to hear it when Howie stepped down from being the Cavs PA announcer.

And thanks to the OP for the heads up about the PD article. Whether it's Ronnie Duncan or not, it does sound like they're looking for a local AM drive show on WERE.

It being Ronnie Duncan, it's probably already in Roger Brown's next column! :)

Those two are joined at the hip, aren't they?

Hey, I'll cut Roger a break on this one. Columnists have their "touch points". Ronnie's one for him. For our little Mighty Blog of Fun(tm), I'm likely to go off into Glunt World, or rant about "19 Action News".

Of course, OMW is not a moneymaking operation, and doesn't reach hundreds of thousands of newspaper subscribers.

People such as Roger and yourself provide people like me, radio junkies who have no broadcast experience, with outlets to get info, whether it be truth or rumor.

You, my friend, provide me with a valuable source of entertaimment.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you...it's appreciated. At times, I wonder who reads the MBoF(tm). I know it gets some visits from regulars here, but there are times I wonder if I'm writing to myself!

Oh, well. It's just for fun. And if I get too obsessed with one thing or another, OMW certainly puts out enough where you can just scroll down to the next item...
