Ronnie I passes away

It is with a great deal of sadness that I report the passing of Ronnie Italiano, aka Ronnie I, after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Ronnie was heard for years playing his music on WHBI and WNWK.

He is primarily known for being the founder and president of the United in Group Harmony Association, which for the last 32 years was dedicated to the promotion and preservation of group harmony R & B, also known popularly as "doo-wopp.

It was through his efforts that a number of classic groups, such as The Heartbeats, re-formed, and entertained years after they had gone the separate ways.

R.I.P my friend.

I do remember Ronnie I's show on WHBI beginning sometime in fall 1975. The following year at Christmas his show was where I first heard The Whispers' "Happy Holidays".

Not exactly street corner accapella but he seemed not to be adverse to playing new tracks that had the right sound.
