Rosary on WPLM

Driving to work this morning at 5:30am I caught the Rosary on WPLM. How long have they been doing this? The recording sounded ancient.

They've done that now for as long as I can remember. Boston Catholic has been running it on 'PLM among other stations in the Diocese. You probably remember that before the station went 24/7, WPLM would sign-off every night at 1:00 AM with "The Lord's Prayer" sung by Perry Como. As soon as the carrier dumped, you'd probably hear something from Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith. Nothing wrong with your radio, it was only WPLR/99.1 from New Haven.

Ditto on the forever.... as long as I can remember it's been on at least 20 years if I had to take a guess

WPLM may have picked up the Rosary when what was then still (I think) WORL 950 dropped it (or maybe when WORL, like all then-Class III-D stations had to lower its pre-sunrise power to 500W or less). For quite a few years before that, most such stations could sign on at 4:00AM local standard time with full daytime power, which for WORL was 5000W. That was probably in the 60s sometime. At that time, the recording was of Cardinal Cushing reciting the Rosary. Cardinal Cushing was the Archbishop of the Boston Archdiocese. Anyone who has a tape of Cardinal Cushing reciting the Rosary definitely has a real New England radio classic!

In addition to broadcasting the Rosary on WROL, Cardnial Richard Cushing also moonlighted as the Suffolk Downs track announcer from 1953 to 1957.

Shorty after the Papa Ginos restaurant founder bought AM 590 as a gift for his wife, daily religious commentary by Cardinal Law began running in afternoon drive in 1986. The broadcasts were scrapped after about 3 months.

I should have added that the Catholic Church did not pay AM 590 which was doing all news at the time for the air time.

WBZ radio airs a Catholic half hour program on Sundays at eithier 4:30am or 5:00am. I have often wonder if the church buys the time or it is part of BZ's Public Service effort.

I should add that AM 590 did not pay The Catholic Church either.

I guess that when one takes a vow of 'poverty', one must moonlight........

Anyone who ever heard Aaaarch Bishop Caaardinal Cushing say the Rosary would never forget his wicked awesome Boston accent.
Cushing presided over my Confirmation when I was 13 and he was just the same in person. He asked us all in church what we wanted to be when we grew up. No one said priest or nun...thank God on the last one. Most nuns were psychologically screwed up. Imagine wearing what was the black widow clothes of the 13th century as your daily habit and having worked with them later in life I am waiting for the Nun abuse scandal to break. It is the undisclosed scandal that more nuns abused girls than priest. Sure, look many of them were teachers who had charge of children all day.

As to Cushing - he was the ulitmate Boston Irish Politician. Still, he did more good than harm. He even tried to heal the animosity many Irish Catholic Americans have against Jews since he brother-in-law was Jewish.

Someday, someone should make a film about his life.

Keith are you correctig my grammer? I had 12 years of Catholic school education. My syntax must be flawless.

From what I have heard, The rosary is soon to be updated By the pastor at St. Peter`s church
In Plymouth. I go as far back to the late `60s and they did the rosary then. It was as I recall a
recording done by the St. mary`s parish in North Plymouth. (It was on an acetate disc-- And it
sounded really bad.) Afterwards, they would play The lords prayer By Perry Como And From what
I have heard in the past, was Jack Campbell`s Favorite song. It would also play at Sunday at 11:55
PM when the station would go off untill the next morning.

Sometime ago, I sent the station an e-mail suggesting that after the current rosary That they should
Play the Beach Boys version of The Lords prayer. It still gets me every time I hear it.

Their response::::: Thanks but The beach boys are not part of our current music blend
And that their version was not available to be used on air.

Just another reason why I hope nothing but the worst for them.

BTW, I soon after e-mailed WATD aking if they could play it And they did--- the following night on Ron Dwyer`s
show. Which is a great show to listen to . He is a treasure not to be missed.

You mean to say that Cocomo by the Beech Boy's was not on the We Play Lousy Music play list. I guess when you say that Ted Kennedy was one of your best friend's you could throw caution to the wind like that.

I was told by a horse walker from Suffolk Downs that Richard Cardinal Cushing worked at the East Boston Oval so he could cover his bar tab at the old Punch Bowl and Napolians night spot in Bay Villiage

Ummm...since Cushing never worked as the track announcer at Suffolk Downs (that was part of an old joke concerning his nasally Boston accent), horses weren't the only thing this guy was taking for a walk.

Nice try, though. Personal issues, perhaps?

Local comedian Steve Sweeney once said that when his mother would listen to the Rosary on the radio, he felt like he was listening to a race track announcer. He then would go into a pretty good bit about it that could not be replicated in text.

Dear Mr. Bench,

I didn't think for a second anyone would really believe that a Cardinal had a second job at a race track.

My post was just a joke nothing else. I know he is an easy target but the reference to Cushing reading the Rosary on the radio it was very hard to pass up the track announcer reference.

As for personal issiues, I was 5 when he died so he had no impact on my life.

There was a story about WPLM's airing of the Rosary.

Apparently, Mr. Campbell, owner and manager of WPLM received a complaint from a protestant minister in town about the station's airing the Rosary.

Mr. Campbell's response?

Run the Rosary TWICE from now on!

Dear Mr. Bench,

You can call me TS.

I didn't think for a second anyone would really believe that a Cardinal had a second job at a race track.

Just to nitpick, he wasn't a cardinal during the time frame you mentioned. But, of course, that isn't what this, or your post, was about, was it?

My post was just a joke nothing else. I know he is an easy target but the reference to Cushing reading the Rosary on the radio it was very hard to pass up the track announcer reference.

Was it also very hard to pass up the snarky cheap shot about the Punch Bowl and the obvious implications? So, spare us the disingenuous BS about the track announcer ref.

What exactly was your motivation to smear someone who, you admit, died when you were five, had no impact on our life, was one of Boston's most respected citizens, and about whom you obviously know nothing?

Regards,
TSB

I am sorry I offended you and have not met the high standards of this board. I will head to confession Saturday afternon and seek absolution.
