Rose Parade float breakdown causes hectic ending

As the 2019 edition of the Tournament of Roses Parade was entering the last 15 minutes, a float caught fire that backed up the entries behind it. Pedestrian traffic then clogged the parade route, as spectators thought the parade had ended.

More from KTLA (whose coverage was picked up again by the Hallmark Channel)

Of course, never to be mentioned by anyone covering the parade. Same with the ESPN/ABC national telecast of the Rose Bowl. "A beautiful day in Southern California"...when in actuality it was cool and windy. But that is the hype that comes along with such.

meanwhile, at the Sugar Bowl, Bevo, the longhorn steer mascot of the Texas Longhorns tried to go after Uga, the bulldog mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs, and of course, PETA is using this to call for the end of live animal mascots:

the story of the Bevo-Uga incident:

PETA's angry reaction to said incident:

Actually the day was beautiful. It was a chilly January 1st, which is absolutely normal for that day. But it was sunny and the wind was only moderate by SoCal standards.

As to the "fire", not only was it contained within minutes (although many thought the smoke was an "effect" done intentionally given that the float had two steam locomotives represented on it). And the media booths were not where the incident happened; the incident was at a corner not visible from the stands. It's likely nobody in those booths knew about the little fire until quite a bit later and by then the float had been attached to a tow rig which pulled it the duration of the course.

A person in the Spanish language coverage team told me they did not know about the fire until they were packing up after the 10 AM "scheduled" end of the broadcast.

NBC and ABC both mentioned this. NBC, in fact, admitted they had missed some floats. For some reason they don't seem to want to admit this most of the time. But in this case it gave them something to do while waiting for the parade to restart. somehow bands were able to get around the mess. And NBC made it sound like much more was coming, and then had to stop all of a sudden.

The networks plan the parade for a 2 hour window before they have to drop to their sports programming. NBC was hoping they could get the finally in before the top of the hour but the delay went much longer.
