Ross Simpson, News Reporter

Ross Simpson, a longtime national news reporter for Mutual Broadcasting, NBC Radio, and AP, has passed away:

He was based in Washington DC.

Worked with Ross for 10 years. He was always smart as a whip and up-beat. Told great stories. One was the time the US peace keeping force was in Somalia. There was little if any outside access to the country. Ross, the AFP and Reuters reporters went together and bought a truck in one of the neighboring countries and drove for three days to get into Somalia and file reports.

Ross was laid off in the big cuts at AP Radio News in 2017 when they eliminated weekend and overnight newscasts.

He was 75 at the time and could have sat on the beach, but instead put himself out there for new job opportunities, landing his first TV role at WDVM anchoring the morning news.

His facebook page was full of updates about how that was going and how much he was enjoying the work, until the posts abruptly ended a few years ago. As the obituary posted by TheBigA notes, he stepped away from the morning news due to illness, though I don't believe he'd disclosed that.
Here's a comment he made in early 2019 about transitioning to TV:

When I was retired from AP Radio in March 2017, I spent 8 mos retired and was bored. I didn't think I was washed up at 75. I had three radio offers on my 75th birthday in October that year and one TV offer. I chose the latter, and have reinvented myself. I am amazed at the viewer response. 3 or 4 emails a day, everyday. And instant recognition in Northern, Va., the eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. I can't go out without a few people coming up to me.
