Route 81

CBS lays off hundreds,Emmis 46 and Rt. 81 lays off NO ONE because Ira knows what he is doing.
Not so fast there. He must have laid off everyone at WCDL. Its been silent for almost a month. He must have also laid off the person responsible for keeping an eye on WNAK too as it's off more than it's on these days. And he must have laid off the person who was in charge of seeing that multiple barter shows do not run simultaneously during morning drive on Light 94.3
Yea. I guess he does know what he is doing after all huh? A true genius.

Ira focusses on the big money stuff. So an ethnic show here or there doesn't get on .BIG DEAL.
You may not like him because maybe YOU are one of the ones that were not good enough to play on his team!

You have to focus in on the small things to make the big things a success, especially in local broadcasting. I spent a few days at WNAK in 06 doing some politicals and helping the Sales Manager out with some accounts. The Sales Manager was busting his butt, pulling rabbits out of hats and as far as I know got no love. I don't think not being good enough is the issue to play on his team, I think the key is knowing what the market can bear and how much you can get from it without alienating fellow broadcasters and more importantly a community.

I wouldn't lower myself to his standards and I would be embarrassed to say I had any connection with him or his so called team. He has, as Yonk so perfectly put it, succeeded in alienating the entire broadcast community in any of the markets that he has infected and in the process also alienated the communities as well.

You don't like Ira because he doesn't like to hang with competitors? Is that the beef?
He has proven many times that he is smarter than all of the rest of the market.Ira is a big market guy having a field day in the bush leagues! You cannot argue with his success but you should try to learn from it!

Smarter than all the rest of the market...yeah, I'd say that's about right. (Sarcasm off)

You must know him quite well. You are a lucky person to be so close to such greatness. Sorry, I had no idea that he was President of the local Mensa chapter too. He's obviously far superior to the rest of us bush-leaguers here in this backward corner of the world. After all, you even pointed out that he drives a Mercedes. The rest of us poor shleps have to do with vintage Pintos, Vegas, and Gremlins. Everybody else with me here? Let's all throw up our hands in unison and surrender to the great Lyra. After all it's only a matter of time before he totally dominates the entire market anyway with his superior brain. ;D

Well guys, I just heard a rumor. It seems Ira just put Chia in charge of the Annual Spaceship Party and we’re all invited! You don’t need to bring a gift or anything – just yourselves since Ira needs nothing, nothing at all. Remember, his divinity can change water into Kool-Aide, which by the way will be the refreshment served at the party. Chia will be passing out little party hats that will be just a bit too tight for your head but don’t worry, the discomfort won’t last long.

And there are exciting activities being planned too! Ira is going to demonstrate how, in the blink of an eye, he is able to stuff a head so full of fertilizer it is able to sprout plantlike growth in just a matter of minutes. Then he’ll explain how that has been the secret of his Divine Success since he was able to learn that old Jedi Mind Trick some years ago. We’ll be riveted to our chairs in anticipation as we begin to nod off from the ever so excellent refreshments that we won’t even notice or care our pockets being emptied while the whole thing is taking place, a slight-of-hand trick so stupendous P.T. Barnum would be proud.

So mark your calendars for an event so BIG even the largest local newspapers will ignore the whole thing.

And wear clean underwear. You never know what will happen once you board the ship…

;D

THAT is funny stuff!!!!!! Hey. Maybe all the the dead air is actually a form of subliminal invitation to the big party. It reminds me of the old "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is listening" thing. If you go to this thing be very very careful and under no circumstances should you ever look directly into Lyra's eyes. Very dangerous!!!!!!!!!!

I'll admit I've not been following the whole Route 81 saga. If I remember correctly, Route 81 was heralded as the Great White Hope for local radio when its plans first emerged some years ago.

What went wrong?

Reality?

Fight nice boys and girls ;D

I don't know Ira from a hole in the ground. All I can say is WAZL started off strong. Local news (not from a newspaper) and I remember several occassions where Pat Ward was at the scene of the story. Now they are like any other station. A newsguy that serves all Route 81 stations reading headlines from the Standard Speaker. I can get that from WILK, Magic 93, WHLM, etc, etc, etc. Or I can just read the paper myself.

Route 81, IMHO, has simply done what all the other media conglomerates have done. Try to squeeze every last dollar out of their operation. Listeners & advertisers will ultimately decide if it was all worth it.

A newsguy who serves all Route 81 stations?? I'm sure Tony Pacelli with all his years of expereince would be delighted to be referred to as "some newsguy". And Tony does the news for WAZL only. WAZL gets it's news locally and has a media partnership with WYLN-TV. The reason the sainted Pat Ward is no longer at WAZL is because he spent more time "being at the scene" then selling advertising which was his primary job. A great newsday doesn't see to it that people's paychecks don't bounce and that the bank loan gets paid!

Tony does the news for WAZL only.
Maybe that's because WCDL is no longer on the air, WNAK is all too often a dead carrier and Light Fm has no place for news between Bob and Tom and John Tesh and Delihah.
Listeners & advertisers will ultimately decide
Yes they will

I stand corrected. The last time a listened to them they Paul Vito reading headlines, who also is listed under WCDL. I used to listen to them in the morning because they had detailed local news for Hazleton. I stopped because their local news in the morning became a 60 second update and I started watching TV news again.

Their seems to be some animosity toward Pat Ward. I know nothing about the man himself. Maybe he was a creep. All I know is when he was at WAZL, I listened because they were local everything, especially news which I felt was important. When he was let go, they started dropping things one by one. I just have the feeling that the reason he was let go was Route 81 radio decided it was too expensive to everything he wanted to do and like so many other media conglomerates, cut costs. Maybe the only thing he was really guilty of was of caring about being local more than about bean counting (which, I admit, is a necessary evil in today's radio world).

Let's put that to bed right now. Pat Ward is one of the true professionals in this business and any attempts to discredit him by anyone at Route 81 should be viewed as exactly what it is. A bitter attempt to try to bring someone far superior to anyone still there down to their level. I guess they find that easier than to try to rise to the level of the bar set by Pat. The facts speak for themselves. Can anyone honestly say that WAZL sounds better or is more active in the Hazleton area business community today than when Pat was at the helm? One other note while we're talking about route 81. Was WNAK or WCDL setting the world on fire in revenue or ratings? No. But they were widely listened to in their respective communities and they were gaining new respect and listeners daily after years of neglect. How does Route 81 justify what they did to those stations? They will tell you that they are providing a service for a specific target audience but how is that possible when they are off the air more than they are on? Can the Hispanic format be so lucrative that you can program dead air for weeks at a time and still say that you are serving the community and running a profitable business? If so there would be a flood of stations making that switch.

There is some scuttlebut circulating in the Hazleton area that Route 81 is looking to purchase a certain Bloomsburg FM station. Anyone hear more? Or less?

I thought Route 81 is on the market? They have been trying to sell the radio stations for a couple of years? That's what I had heard.

It would take an awful lot of money for Joe Reilly to sell WHLM-FM to Route 81. And then, he would really think LONG and HARD after not having an FM all those years, when he just had WHLM 930 AM.

It would be ludicrous for WFYY-FM 106.5 to be sold from Max Media too.

Maybe they could sell WLGL 92.3 FM in Riverside.

Hey Joe Reilly, what even happened to your friend Jim Gannon aka Jim Woller?

Thanks,
