Rover mentioned in the Wall Street Journal

Pretty mundane article about who will replace Stern...Mancow, Bob & Tom, Rover... it is good to see a local show get some publicity.

I think you can find the story on the wsj website.

In my opinion

I think a lot of these stations will attempt to go the local route. The money they'll be saving from Stern's exit will undoubtedly allow some of these stations to hire their own show. Rover may get some of the tablescrap-smaller markets, but being the smallest and altogether smallest name of the bunch
doesn't help the cause of justifying him being the majority Stern-replacement.

Re: In my opinion

Not to mention, here in Columbus, Rover and Stern are on different frequencies right now. I doubt the local North American Broadcasting will try to get Rover from the Infinity station.

Re: In my opinion

How much do you wanna be that this is the first time "Rover" has ever read the Wall Street Journal?

As I've said before, Rover certainly has some talent, but staying power?? That I'm not sure about. He's not as quick witted or daring as Opie and Anthony were - and his "cast" of characters are probably the worst in radio history. If the buying and selling of Rover's show includes Duji and Deter...than he's not going much further in this business. Today's story (contrived bit alert, contrived bit alert) was that Deter's buddy was left $30,000 by a dying grandmother - and after he was asked for financial advice, Deter told him to enter the World Poker Tournament - th story ends with the friend losing all the money, and then calls of outrage from the listeners about how stupid Deter is. Let me tell you, that stuff is just not going to work as a viable alternative to smart, creative radio. He definitely needs better writers...as everyone knows, much of Stern's show is scripted (sans the naked girls, and the news).

I'll disregard your hyperbole about Duji and Dieter (even though they have alliterative names) and say that they are not all that bad. Granted, they are the reason I set my alarm clock to WXTM (I can only listen so long before the urge to get up and turn off the radio exceeds the urge to sleep), but I feel that, if properly utilized, they are okay.

Also, I doubt Dieter is non-negotiable (isn't he a replacement for some guy named Lunchbox?)

Contrived as it may be, that bit got people to call. Chances are that those who called were also compelled to tell those they encounter about the radio show. To me (having never been employed in anything even remotely related to any media,) it seems that calls of any sort are a plus. I've heard that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I don't think the content is off, I think that it is the delivery. I did not hear the bit of which you write, but I would guess that Dieter was too scripted in his pitch. I attribute this not to lack-of-talent -- I'd say that it is inexperience. Howard Stern is past 50 years old. Assuming that Rover's crew is close to his age, they are all young compared to other syndicated personalities. Given time, who knows, maybe the Rover show could be something.

Rover's advantage over Stern:
Stern 300k (average) per station
Rover FREE

I think Stern is getting more like $500k from other stations in the state.

Re: In my opinion

Untrue. Rover owns the show, and each of the affiliates (even Infinity) pay to carry it. And Stern is closer to $1.5M for WNCX, certainly not $300K. A good local show easily runs over $300K.

Re: In my opinion

Stern's compensation is weighted in relation to the size of the market..a trip to www.thesmokinggun.com will confirm this, given some of the lawsuits that have been filed over the years regarding Howard when things go sour in a market..

I'll listen to Rover when I'm in Cleveland...I happen to like the show as an alternative to Stern..When's he's on his game, he can be really funny..when he's having an off day, you can tell..same with Stern..

Stern said this week, as reported on FMQB.com that he thinks he'll be gone at the end of the summer..of course he's been predicting his Infinity demise for months now..

The average age of the Stern crew, with the exception of Artie Lange, is either at 50 or just over it..Robin, Howard and Fred are all now 50 or over..

Dieter and Duji are just kids..still finding their way in this business...and the show on Extreme is a far better product than the trio that continues to mark time at WMMS..
