Royce International saga, update

Ha! 25% discount from the previous offer AND VCY put the offer to the bankruptcy court and not Stolz.
Clever move...but Crazy Ed is still in the driver's seat as far as the BK filing goes. The discount most likely represents the $$ VCY put into replacement equipment and no broker commission.

What about an ASCAP licenses? You'll remember this is kind of what stated the whole problem! Does Ed have an ASCAP LICENSE?
Does the dude in New Mexico have the rights to air his programming in SF?

Royce International’s KFRH-FM 104.3 “NOW” in Las Vegas; KREV-FM 92.7 in San Francisco; and KRCK-FM in Palm Springs, Calif. failed to pay ASCAP license fees “over several years” and continued to broadcast songs written and published by the group’s members without permission ~California U.S. District Judge Jesus G. Bernal awarded more than $900,000 in attorney’s fees and costs in an infringement action filed by ASCAP on behalf of its members.

That award, levied against Royce International and Stolz, followed an earlier jury verdict in the case that found Royce International and Stolz to be “willful infringers” and required them to pay $330,000 in statutory damages.

So how is he playing TOP 40 in Palm Springs on KRCK and EDM with ASCAP artists in SF? I assume KFRH is a simulcast of KBET AM?
But cannot find out what's on that frequency, Help anyone?

Mr. Stolz paid the music royalty judgement ordered by Judge Bernal's court. What he didn't pay was the receiver, which led to the present bankruptcy proceeding.

Has anyone done EDM half decently in North America this century?
If the billions poured into promoting hip hop results in the current ratings results, no way EDM could ever work here.
I know this is just a limited signal that's challenged to stay on air but wouldn't it more appropriate to do alternative since the format now has no presence locally?
You would have a better chance of finding some loyals willing to play p.i.t.a for you that way. Air some quotes as promos... maybe a few would go b.i.t.d chain themselves to the transmitter? Build a coalition with Berkeley? It's a long shot but a shot.

I would say that in the early mid 2000s Energy 92.7 had a good Dance/EDM format. Very successful at bridging the club and gay audiences, felt very San Francisco, and if the owners (Flying Bear?) didn't massively overpay for the license (recall it was $30+ mil) and have the huge debt service on it, it would probably still be here and successful.

Yes. There is a rhythmic/dance FM in Mexico City that is among the top 10 music stations in a market with well over 50 fulltime full signal stations. It ranks even higher in the ABC+ socioeconomic levels where most ad buys go.

XHSON-FM is a EDM radio station in Mexico City owned and operated by NRM Comunicaciones. Its 4 regular presenters and 31 resident DJs (alongside several additional guest DJs from time to time) host the station's 24-hour mix of electro-house, techno, trance, progressive, drum and bass, dubstep, house, breaks and other dance and electronica music. It also plays chill-out and lounge music 13 hours a week.(Wikipedia)

In addition to the court appointed receiver; VCY for equipment; tower rentals, etc. Crazy Ed has left a trail of creditors who want a piece of KREV's sale price.

I did read it but the wording didn't make it clear that Albuquerque station owner Don Davis is programming these stations.

In fact, Lance wrote...

...which I thought was a reference to JamTraxx based on the earlier comments here.

Reading it again, it's still a little ambiguous but K6JHU is probably right. Thanks for pointing back to the link.

EDIT: Inside Radio's article states clearly that Don Davis is programming the station.
Apparently a phone number in New Mexico indicated that it is being programmed from New Mexico.

Hello Everyone! As my activities are brought up from time to time on R-D, I thought I would join and make myself available to answer any questions or clarify anything you like. You will find me to be an "open book", to the extent possible within business decorum or confidential information.

We are presently programming KREV / San Francisco from here in Albuquerque; please know the present format is only a placeholder, and we expect to ramp up the full programming pallet in January. Working with station owner Ed Stolz is a blast - he is a true "Radio Guy", with a real passion for radio. Ed is very committed to the EDM format in San Francisco, and as EDM is not only a business for me (Pirate 96.7 Albuquerque) but a passion for many years, to have the opportunity to program a station in the #4 market is a once-in-a-lifetime thrilling opportunity.

So, anything anyone wants to know, please let me know! I look forward to being part of the incredible community that David has created here.

Thanks for joining, Don.

I'm not the creator (that was decades ago) or the owner here (that is Frank) but am a happy moderator seeing that you have just joined!

Love it!! I’ve been listening as much as I can, in Redwood City the signal can get a bit dicey in some areas, my only question would be is there any room to improve the signal for us Peninsula listeners? We are about 20 miles south of San Francisco. Either way, I’ll still be supporting and loving it :)

Answering in reverse order.

Rusty: I was indeed involved in KLBU in Santa Fe. (BLU 102.9) Some dot-com millionaires bought the station from my partner and me in,I believe, 2004. The (excellent) Santa Fe signal was a booster; the main transmitter was east of Pecos, the city of license, up high in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains. We used a slow-speed diesel generator from Arrow Engine of Tulsa. Eventually the station was bought by Scott Hutton of Santa Fe. Later, Scott and AGM swapped stations, so AGM now owns and operates the station as KJFA regional Mexican.

NickD: This is a long-term project. Were it anything else, I would not be pouring in my heart, soul, money and time into the opportunity. Ed and I work together beautifully, and I am honored to work alongside.

Radiopaw: The signal from 92.7 is suppressed to the south to protect a distant short-spaced co-channel station. Ed and I have observed considerable multipath on 92.7 in the area you speak of, and have a plan to address the issue. Of course, you may always listen to our stream at www.pirate927.com, which BTW is processed independently from the FM processing. It is one mighty fine sounding stream (yes, blowing our own horn), and we intend to strongly promote both the on-air and stream when we initiate our actual product. Keep in mind that not only is the programming a placeholder; so is the logo.

David: I am happy to have become a participant. I appreciate the opportunity!

Best wishes to all, Don Davis

Wow, it's so cool you noticed us being down! We were doing upgrades in the automation computer and building IP network, which is the audio source both for the on-air and stream platforms. We process the audio completely separately (and differently) for air and the stream; we encode the stream here in Albuquerque.

YES! The protection is KTOM. The KREV transmitter site, situated in Bayview Park, uses a two-element SWR custom directional antenna that creates a notch toward KTOM. The KREV 70 dbu signal covers more people than live in the entirety of the state of New Mexico.

Notice the KREV signal increases in the East Bay due to terrain.

We are all very excited for the launch of the "real" format in a few weeks.

Can’t stations use a directional translator like KPFA-FM do to address weak points?
Yes they can. The rules are a bit different for commercial stations like KREV vs KPFA. Mainly most commercial stations (withstanding some rural stations) must have their translators within their protected contour. They must also literally receive the originating signal on a tuner and rebroadcast it. Non-comms like KPFA can basically apply/buy a translator anywhere around the country and use satellite/other methods to rebroadcast the station.

The other issue involves trying to shoehorn/buy a translator into what is one of the most crowded radio markets in North America.
