RTÉ Radio 1 on 252 kHz

Nice. What antenna - the 440's internal or your 100' wire? I had a steady carrier on 252 but not nearly enough to produce any audio here (using my 440's internal antenna).

Great catch, Tincap.....and Can-con, no less! I think my best catch in my limited experience in Brockville was probably WRLL (now WVON). I think I also had KOA, but wasn't able to verify.

Cyberdad, the irony of the Can-Con didn't escape me...nor the fact that it is 'haverst moon' last evening. :D

Western catches from Brockville have taken in WHO, WBAP, WWL, CBW, etc. I may have gotten Denver's KHOW just last week (thought I caught ...OW and a partial traffic report, through WPRO, WMAL and CFOS, but can't verify)

And kilokat, the catch was made on the 440's internal, the longwire totally dropping the signal. My understanding is that longwire for LW reception, would have to be very long indeed. You're about 1000km west of me, but your Quantum may make up for the gap????

Just got home tonight and will quickly check for potential hotspots, before hitting an early sack.

its not LW dx but caught what i believe to be vatican radio on 1611kc. just a bit ago

Vatican Radio? Wowzers, they're only putting out 25 kW.

I'm hearing a number of spanish stations sloping over onto 1611, but besides Toronto's CHHA 1610, the rest would have to be SW stations coming in (???), because there doesn't appear to be any other spanish language stations powerful enough on the MW band to fetch up here.

The longwave band was hot last night around 0500 UTC. I had decent audio on 162, 171, 183, 216, 234, and 252. 171 and 216 were blasting in. This is the first time I've heard anything on longwave besides non-directional beacons. There was no need tuning across the band with the BFO on, at one point it seemed like I was tuning across the domestic MW band except the broadcasters were all foreign of course. Exciting night for sure... By about 0530 UTC the show was over.

Will the Quantum QX MW loop head pick up LW signals or does Gerry make a seperate head for LW? I was aware of his Tropical band head which I also have but was not aware of a LW head? I have never tried to pick up LW with my MW loop head.

My only option right now is using the radio's internal antenna for LW reception. Gerry makes a LW loophead for the Quantum unit and I've noted my MW loophead is deaf on longwave, which is to be expected. I think the LW loophead is a fairly recent addition to his lineup. How do you like the tropical band loophead? I've been contemplating purchasing the LW and tropical heads. I've also heard favorable things about LF Engineering's active LW antennas.

kilokat7;
From my QTH here in S.Central Ohio, I have not had much luck as of yet on the tropical bands with my QX although as I understand it, the best season for receiving the tropical band broadcasts is in the winter time so hopefully it will improve here shortly...so far I have received mainly the Religious programs from the USA mainly, along with a couple of out of country broadcasts.

I get RTE 252 once back in 1992,,, it was then called Atlantic 252 and aired a top 40 format.. You can read alot about it online.. The station is located in Trim Ireland, a small village about 60 miles south of Dublin.. I heard it that one time in indiana, and never heard it again... It has something like 500kw.... I too, got it as Atlantic 252, back in the early '90s, although I was much closer to the source then...living in Holland at the time. Having said that, I've gotten 252 then and now on the very same radio. :D

As I mentioned in another thread, 252 puts in a solid....if noise-plagued...day and night signal in central London. Strong enough to easily penetrate into the hotel where I stay. It was off for a while, but on my last couple of trips it was back on. I'm going to be back in London at the end of the month and then on to Germany. As always, I'll report on what I hear.

Also, Tincap, I'll be in your part of the world this coming week. I'll miss Brockville on this trip, but Tuesday night I'll be in cottage country (Gravenhurst). I'm looking forward to hopefully finding some good DX up there, given the minimal noise level....especially now with the tourists gone. (Happy Thanksgiving, BTW.)

Hearing music on 252khz with female announcer on Friday 11:32pm. Signal is too low to clearly hear what is being said.
I'm excited. There, I've said it.

Southwest Ohio.

252 khz / Algeria in French with readable signal. About 9:15PM Eastern. Reception only lasted 10 minutes. This station is listed at 700kw nights, non directional.

207 khz / Unable to identify the station, but heard what seemed to choral music and a male speaker. Religious?

Nothing else readable on longwave during the time I listened.

Nice catches Icangelp;
I have yet to receive any voice on LW although once I get the ALA-1530+ up and running I'll be trying....not having much luck on the Tropicals either other than the USA religion shows.....seems my Eton E-100 does a better job on the Tropicals than my QX Tropical head above about 3500 KHz...... the QX Tropical head has been abit disappointing so far......the MW head is GREAT !!!!

10:00pm EST: Finally caught Ireland on 252 with a nice "Radio One" ID. Currently coming in good but fighting Algeria on the same channel. Lightning crashes are bad tonight on LW but signals are still punching through.

Try this online list of LW stations: http://www.dxinfocentre.com/lw.htm I'm thinking it's probably Eidar-Reykjavik, Iceland.
