RTN Currently Off the Air

Everything is back in synch in Seattle. The programming matches with the digital programming guide. It sure is nice.

Here in Phoenix, KAZT 7.2 is (almost) back to normal, except that the scheduled programs actually air one hour later now (other than some of its weekend programs in place of "Unreliable Sources," which, unfortunately, I have a feeling is coming back soon). Maybe they're still trying to figure out what time zone AZ is in since we don't recognize Daylight Savings Time! Now, there's only one nit-picky thing I have to say, and that is their new Legal ID's don't mention "KAZT-CA Phoenix"

Now, only if the local cable company (Cox) could only pick it up...

WEHT 25.2 (Evansville, IN) is, like KAZT, almost back to normal. We're getting It Takes A Thief in place of Unreliable Sources at 10PM now. If US comes back, I won't mind too much, because I've never been really fond of ITAT.

It's odd that KAZT's legal ID isn't the same as it was. WEHT's is exactly as it was prior to the temporary shutdown, but it just came back ... probably happened over the weekend while I was watching other stuff.

I didn't see any changes in the General Media owned WCMH DT 4.2 at all. I do wonder about the RTN two late night talk shows. Is Off Beat Cinema still airing as well?

Well if RTN goes under (I hope not) General Media could air their syndicated shows in a endless loop. (I was off yesterday due to the reduce work schedule I'm working now. It's better than collecting unemployment.)

Side Thought:

The cable companies could be afraid the looming switch to Digital Television. Since DTV provides more channels, uncompress HD feeds, better picture and sound better receptions ect. When the DT towers go full power on February 17th then my local channels in Columbus Ohio could ad more sub channels. There is Accuweather to replace Weather Plus. Last time I called Columbus Time Warner they are charging extra for the OTA digital sub channels. Not Insight Cable. I lived in downtown Columbus so Time Warner only.

I'm sorry people have the second half of 2005 to prepare for the Digital switch over. There was countless PSA's infomercials local and national soft tests. There are analog towers are being decommission right now. Local stations can't afford to continue to broadcast in analog after the date.

1. The company that owns WCMH is called "Media-General" not "General Media."

2. The Columbus stations are already at full power. Nothing will change on the transition date. WSYX is attempting to move to a different channel (from VHF 13 to UHF 48), but even assuming it's approved quickly, it still won't happen before summertime.

3. There's nothing keeping the stations from adding subchannels regardless of power level except concerns about picture quality.

From that "Silicon Dust"/HD HomeRun site, here's the capture for that infamous "no, really, it's not our fault! Don't call us! We didn't do it!" slide for WUAB-DT 43.2 Lorain/Cleveland, former home of the long-dead "The Tube" music video network:

http://img.lineupui.silicondust.com/snapshots/18/snapshot_7850418.jpg

I clicked on it and got a slide that read "404 Not Found".

The images on SiliconDust get updated every so often as new screenshots come in. Here, go down and look at physical channel 28, program 4:

I'm thinking that the overall economy is another factor keeping stations from launching subchannels. Most of these subchannel networks (whether it's RTN, .2, LATV, etc.) are from companies that don't have the deep pockets of a News Corporation or Disney (maybe with the exception of ThisTV). .2 Net looks like it has the potential of being more successful than ThisTV (a better grade of movies helps), but they're independent and not backed by MGM's large owners. With the economy being as it is they keep on pushing back the launch date.

Maybe the My Retro TV with the bouncing ball would be a "please stand by" or an intermission slide, I guess?

As I post this, I am able to watch WPXI Pittsburgh RTN on line. I can find no link to it on the WPXI web site, but I find links on tv tuner sites such as tv channels free dot com or WWI tv dot com. I live in the tampa bay market, but I don't have cable so I can't watch WFLA's 8 Prime. I keep hoping that WPXI's stream is here to stay, and that some body doesn't rat them out and they make tv channels free and them other guys take them away. I would be sad if they did.
What do you think?

We are talking Reserve Square here...and Raycom doesn't seem to have any chainwide deals to replace The Tube.

This TV has been showing up on Raycom stations. It started off replacing WeatherPlus on WAFF and KCBD. It's now on WXIX and WXTX in place of the slide, has made brief appearances replacing the slide on WAVE ("may be coming soon" according to a source), and is coming to WSFX: http://img.lineupui.silicondust.com/snapshots/78/snapshot_7776278.jpg

I would not be the slightest bit surprised to find This TV on WUAB 43-2 some time soon.

This is rich... On WAVE 3.2, the "Tube" slide is back, but if you hit the guide button on the remote, the guide for This TV is there!

Thanks for the update, Trip...I didn't know that site's JPG files were volatile.

I'm wondering why DT 34 over air is listed as WNYODT (??). It's Univision O&O WQHS/61's digital half.

And I was wondering how W35AX ("The CAT"'s Cleveland simulcast) made it to a Cleveland TWC system, but as it turns out, that's a Cox system.

It guesses at the channel IDs based on channel number and other odds and ends. There are some markets on SiliconDust where none of the channels are noted correctly. I just look at the screencaps.

Oh, and add another Raycom This TV affiliate, WFIE in Evansville IN, coming soon.

WNYO is Buffalo, analog 49, digital 34. A mixup, perhaps.

SiliconDust just has a lousy algorithm for figuring out which station it's seeing on a given channel. I never trust those labels as they seem to be wrong more than right. I made myself a nice list of stations and which zip code to use to get to them on SiliconDust. The labels are very wrong on a lot of them.

To add to what Trip said about WFIE, they'll be turning on This TV in just a few weeks, according to their programming director. I'm glad to have more choices.

Of course, on another note, here in the Evansville market, we're still waiting for our local CW station, WAZE (CH 19 analog, 20 digital), to go full-power period. WAZE's owner, Roberts Broadcasting, got caught in the former owner's (South Central Communications) lackadaisical attitude toward actually fulfilling the requirements of their CP ... i.e., actually BUILDING the damned thing. Roberts had to get another extension, plus go through a bunch of other hoops. I've yet to hear any updates with regard to their status. If the transition date holds at 2/17, I doubt they'll be ready then. If it goes to 6/12, maybe ... ???

I don't known about the .2 Network. Since the parent company GTN sold WSFJ-TV/DT to Trinity Broadcasting Network for 16 million dollars and moved to Trinity Broadcasting Network former channel W23BZ (TV23).

W23BZ is a translator operating at 17KW. The 16 million is going to be used for startup cost for the .2 Network. .2 is supposed to air in Columbus but unknown witch station going to carry it.

Sky Angel IPTV carries GTN, I do not know what they charge to carry the station on their IPTV system.

It seems strange that stations want to continue to broadcast digitally on the VHF band. UHF is the better choice. I did read a report that the FCC want to explore to expand the FM radio band from 76.1 MHZ to 87.9 MHZ.

Low VHF (2-6, same as the expanded FM band you mention) is crap for DTV. High VHF (7-13) actually makes sense from a signal propagation standpoint, from what I hear.

It will depend on how their showing at NATPE turns out this year. I have a feeling that fewer station groups will attend this year, so it might be a wash for them.

As for ThisTV, looking at one of their local schedules, I am disappointed in the selection and quality of the movies they offer. .2, if they do launch, does have a leg up on them in that category.
