RTV finally on in Houston

It's been a long time coming ever since KNWS announced its affiliation with RTV, which never happened because of Johnson Broadcasting's bankruptcy filing.

RTV has finally found a home on the Houston dial. KUVM-CD 34.2 fired it up last night. I had expected RTV to land on KUVM-LD channel 10, especially since they're running color bars now on 10.1. So 34.2 surprised me somewhat.

KUVM-CD (34) is still running their station logo on 34.1, 34.3 and 34.4.
KUVM-LD (10) is running color bars on 10.1, blank on 10.2, Revenue Frontier infomercials on 10.3, and Azteca América on 10.4. I'm sure AZA is only in place because they're contracted to run it through September of 2012. AZA is on full power 51.2 as well.

Good for those people that can receive 34. That is one station, no matter what I have tried, I have never been able to capture. What a shame, considering there are so many other places on the dial that would be a considerable upgrade by acquiring RTV.

Surprised their isn't more discussion on this one. We all waited for RTV unfortunately I take it "no one" can pick this one up. I tried with my DB4 with no luck whatsoever.

I'm in Westchase in a ground-floor condo with an east view, so I consider myself lucky to get any low-power stations OTA. The strongest of the low-powers that I receive is 43; 10 (RF 40) is next strongest; 21 and 34 are weak and 28 only occasionally comes in.

Here is the FCC's plot of 34's coverage area.

Watching Banacek right now; very good reception. There are times, however, when I can tell there's something there but it's unwatchable and I'm less than 10 miles from Missouri City.

Is this channel actually on 34? I mean, I know like ch. 2 is digital 32 I do believe as an example.

Yes, 34 is the actual channel number.

I get it in Katy with about 70% signal strength and no drop-outs on my Dish ViP622 receiver using a 4-bay Channel Master UHF antenna in the attic.

Yea, I can get it at my parents place with 70% using a DB4 inside sitting on the ground but out here in Clear Lake can't even receive it using a DB8 (2nd floor) using the same similar setup Dish 722k you mentioned.

FRUSTRATING!

Also, I'm an idiot I know but can anyone explain what the mapping means...

solid blue = ?
dotted blue = ?

The legend tells me absolutely nothing.

Just connect the dots. There's no distinction between solid blue and dotted blue; the dots are just an artifact of how the contour is plotted.

Any place inside the curve should be able to get KUVM (albeit perhaps with an outdoor antenna); any place outside will have to work hard to get it.

Or you can try RabbitEars's Longley-Rice map: http://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=1393386&map=Y

The "warmer" the color, the weaker the signal at that point on the map. Very roughly, green=indoor antenna; yellow=attic antenna; orange=rooftop antenna; red=dedicated DXer only

Actually, my maps are pessimistic. Hopefully, if I've done my math right, red means a medium to large roof antenna will do the job without a ton of sweat. I'd say orange is small roof antenna or large attic. I don't know, it's not static. :)
