RTV Gets Worser and Worser

If that is possible.

Sunday evening there is a show I like called "Disasters of the Century". It is mostly about historical disasters long ago and the film clips are usually black and white. Not a big technical challenge to broadcast......except for RTV it seems.

Last night's hour broadcast was severely out of audio sync for the entire show. We're not talking a few microseconds here, we're talking 5-10 full seconds. Several times the video would freeze waiting for the audio to catch up but then it would fail sync immediately.

In addition to the audio/video sync issues there were stopsets that were out of sync by 10-15 seconds. The program audio might continue on while the video launched into the middle of a commercial or vice versa. Several commercials were only seconds long.

I pretty much had crossed off RTV right after they first began broadcasting because of issues like this but last evening was much worse than ever before and made watching almost impossible. I cannot understand why they are still in business.

The RTV affiliate in Los Angeles (KFLA-LP 8) has had their PSIP clock off by 8 hours for at least a year and a half and no tv program data is ever sent. I guess it wouldn't matter because it would display the show title and description for whatever is airing 8 hours later even if it was working.

Another interesting side note is KFLA never identifies itself which I believe is required by the FCC. Not even a constant on-screen bug in the corner like the other LPs around here do. Nothing. Just goes to show how no one is watching RTV in Los Angeles including the people that operate it.

I imagine there is a lone rat endlessly running in a wheel for a piece of cheese it hopes to eat one day up atop Mt. Wilson. Then someone used the kinetic energy the rat was producing, attached it to a transmitter and BOOM they're a television station.

Are you sure it's not just an affiliate or cable thing Tuna?

Cheers & 73 ;D

I watch OTA. RTV is a sub-channel here co-existing with two other digital signals. The other two were behaving themselves nicely last night when RTV was gargling its broadcast. Whether it was the affiliate or not I can't say but the same sort of problem has been an issue with RTV (and only RTV) since it signed on here. This was, by far, the worst I'd seen though.

73's as well de NBIG (from long, long ago)

Hmm.....Sounds more like an affiliate bandwidth problem than anything

Disasters of the Century. On RTV.

Something strangely prophetic about that.

I discovered just a few minutes ago the programs exists online (for rent). Buh-bye RTV! :D

Not to mention NYC is losing both affiliates. The main RTV affiliate in NYC WKOB Channel 42.2 flipped to something called Drive In TV all movies. The back up RTV affiliate for NYC WSAH Channel 43.1 Bridgeport, CT is for sale at a bankruptcy auction. The new owner has no obligation to carry RTV.

And in recent months, RTV has lost many stations to the new Live Well channel (as was the case with stations such as WXYZ in Detroit) and Me-TV (as it was with Media General's stations, as well as WSB in Atlanta).

With RTV doing even worse that it did under Equity, no wonder more and more stations, even cheap LPTVs, are going elsewhere.

RTV was at it's best 5 years ago when they first signed on. Since then the programming has quickly gone downhill as they lost so many libraries of shows. The network completely went in the wrong direction over the last 5 years, getting progressively worse rather than better, and that is no way to a successful business.

Believe it or not, digital LPTV stations are not required to ID.

Ctrl+F, type "digital". No results.

Then look at this FCC PDF: http://www.sbe34.org/wiki/tiki-download_file.php?fileId=26

Read paragraph 194 on pages 64-65. The sentence in question is cut in half across the two pages. "For these reasons, we will not establish at this time identification requirements for digital LPTV and TV translator stations."

Does Drive In TV have a website?
