10,000 watts at 1700 AM is like 500 watts at 540. Not much coverage. I get AM 1700 on my iPhone better than on the radio.
The only thing AM 1700 is for: Padres Baseball for east county. XEPRS/AM 1090 has bad coverage in east county -- the Tavern Road exit on I-8 has 1090 strong at the beginning, but at the end of the off ramp ... 1090 is poor in reception. That's during daytime ....
what ever goes on AM 1700 it must be inexpensive. The reason for the gutting of the station in December was for expense. Mark Larson, Stacy Taylor and their producers were the only payroll on air. As Bob points out, it's technology that is hurting them. There are a lot of radios that 1610 is the upper limit. Add the weirdness of the station (and the Mexico-based owner) it's one interesting read if you remember 560 AM and the cross pollution the Mexico company did before being bribed ... sorry ... placed at the present frequencies.
