Rumor Coming True -- "The Rock" Is No More

From what I'm hearing, it's all but official -- the end of WRNO as we know it.

The launch date of the new 99.5 and its talk format is somewhere around April 20. Their local talent lineup includes Andre Trevigne and Monica Pierre, and apparently, Sean Hannity will be moving over sometime next month.

Long live "The Rock of New Orleans."<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by occasionally on 04/14/06 01:33 AM.</FONT></P>

Wait a second... was this Monica's idea?? I didn't know she was also making bad decisions for CC!

Now this makes even less sense than WWL on the FM.

Is CC just pissed that, in the listener's mind, WWL got all the credit for URBNO?

Last I heard, 830 and 990 were for sale. 990 even has the format already built in!<P ID="signature">______________

My question is if Andre Trevigne and Monica Pierre are online, wouldn't this seem like a black oriented talk.. and make every holding of CCNO African American geared except for WODT (sports) and WNOE (country)?

My question is, with WWL pulling WWL on FM as they are calling the new 105.3, could a new news station even be supported with effectively WWNO 89.9 (and it's NPR news), WWL 870/105.3, WSMB 1350, WIST 690 ,and WGST 990 covering the town...

with most areas having 4 talkers that are roughly the same size post Katrina and with CC's past experience, is it worth it to blow up a legendary station for talk that may not even work (basically CC making a talker cause they didn't have one for Katrina)?

What about 105-3 The End? I know for a fact Entercom owns more then 1 station using that name. And they seem to be trying to grab the former KKND audience with B97. But then again simmulcasting sister AM talkers seems to be a new trend. Examples would be Bonneville in Salt Lake City and NextMedia in Saginaw, MI.<P ID="signature">______________

Their claim was more people wanted to hear the news talker on FM where it was simucast for 7 months before flipping back to "oldies" than oldies listeners. As someone said, the FM got into the building a lot easier than AM does..But I don't think you'll ever see the AM side go off the air or downgrade.... Too many like listening to WWL from the fishing holes where only the AMer can go (due to distance from New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi)

My question, would be why CC hasn't gone after the MC Media stations locally that are for sale , as one already has a news format on it already (and CC would I think be under the cap as CC only owns two AMs in town)

But don't look for the 105.3 signal to adjust to anything else for a while (at least until they get the 100kw signal back on IMO)... But yeah, for CC to blow a rock station that can be easily be converted active rock (since the air talent and all are already there who know the format)if this isn't a smoke and mirrors deal, would be idiotic as , yes you will get the listeners, but how many? and two FM talkers? come on...... One would faulter quick...and I think it would be upstart CC before name brand recognition of WWL.

RFLA

The other thing I've noticed about WWL is how "crisp" the 105.3 signal is in the car with a good stereo. I'd probably listen to the FM around town and the AM when out of town.
Another thing, man, I'd be jacked if they took "Rock of New Orleans" away.

Hmmmm...Kill the heritage and legendary format of RNO to push in an unwanted talker on the FM. There is sooooooo much that will kick CC ass if they do this.

First killing WRNO, probably the second most noticed station in NOLA (only behind WWL) that made its run off rock n roll. Trading that heritage fromat in for talk? Well, now that I think of it CC does have a huge ego and testosterone problem, not unlike them at all to kill off the best known station they have in favor of some format they can take credit for bringing to to city (in this case a talker that started on the FM). Second WWL has forever been New Orleans source for news and information on the radio waves. Talk on 870 is as synomonus with WWL as rock on RNO.

Second hasn't talk on the FM been tried (and failed misserably in NOLA)? I think B97 tried that prolonged stunt once.

Third what type of programing can CC possibly put on that would draw listeners and offest WWL as the king of talk radio. That is like comparing apples to oranges.

I'm sure this list could go on and on, but I will leave it with this starters.

Here's to (BLEEP) Channel, destroying yet another legenadary and heritage station!

Re: Rumor Coming True --

If this does come to pass, I only have one thing to say, "Goodbye dear old friend. We had many fun unforgettable times together...I hate to see you pass..." Just as all my physical radio momentos are gone to Katrina, this too shall pass. It'll be a very sad day in New Orleans radio history.

I'll have to ask Michael Costello to have an ol' WRNO/WTIX reunion soon on the air at TIX-FM. That would be awesome!

Sorry I don't know Sean Hannity all that well. Is he as pompous as Rush (ugly) Limbaugh?! Speaking of people with huge radio ego's... Limbaugh is DEFINITELY one. All he does is brag about his "award-winning" show. Blah....

Monica Pierre??? Isn't she the co-host of the long-running CJ Morgan and Co. morning show on Q?! Is she gonna do both?

And B-97 did do that FM talk radio thing back in late '95. What a mistake. That stunt cost them their near #1 spot in the ratings AND credibility with many here in this city. Personally, I don't think the station has never been the same since, but I guess we can thank E-Z Communications for that one.

What I don't understand is why do something like that with an already-successful station?! Sure WRNO hasn't been the greatest since CC took over, but that's 'cause their idea of programming is wack & corrupt! They ruin their heritage stations 'cause they don't know what their doing and they have NO regard to a stations heritage and longevity. They way I look at it is... <u>DON'T FIX ANYTHING THAT ISN'T BROKEN</u>! Some stations in this city are they way they are because of their longevity. CC is going to make a BIG mistake, I think.

Keep it rock-based. Do what BAYOU is doing, but open up the playlist. Confine the classic rock to a "Classic Rock Lunch Hour" or something to that effect. Give us some alternative, but force it down our throats.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: "The Rock" Is No More because of CC!!!

I'm sorry, but it's not like WRNO has been the Rock of New Orleans straight through it's entire existence - there was all-satellite Z-Rock, then the AC stint as the River.

You never know - FM Talk might do nothing and the powers that be could be bring back the rock after a while.
