Rumor: Eskin to resign this week

JUST a rumor...but I'm guessing there could be something to it.

Spoke with someone in the know last night. He told me that it is very likely Eskin is resigning. He is actually being forced out. A "leave or we will make you leave" kind of deal.

Let's see what happens.

My prediction:

Jody Mac re-unites with Macnow for Middays
Gargano to PM Drive with Ike Reese

Just heard Howard's official announcement...he was choked up...I feel bad for him he stated its"to pursue new challanges"...with the FM rumor..I just believe he was pushed out...I think they just made a huge mistake if that is the case.

According to the Radio-info front page Eskin is not leaving, but his role with the station is being re-defined. He will still work the Eagles games, covering from the field, and will fill in from time to time. It sounds like a demotion to me.

I was an intern at WCAU radio during their all-news format in 1977...Howard was the evening sports anchor there and always treated me with respect, even when I screwed up changing the paper roll on the old-fashioned sports ticker machine. He may be opinionated and yes obnoxious at times, but he still goes to the games and interacts with the teams.

I think they let him step down with dignity. I honestly don't believe Howard had a choice in the matter. I think pairing him with Ike Reese has hurt him.I am aware Eskin's ratings were down before adding Reese...but they got worse once he joined the show. I also believe the imminent change to FM would have helped the show..I think CBS S*** the bed on this one..I'm not saying this was the worst mistake ever...but I would have waited til the switch to FM ...waited two books to see if the ratings went up...I also think Ike should have been removed...he's the one that should have been deligated to Eagles coverage.

the way he is likely being pushed out isn't cool (although I am sure he is being compensated nicely), but let's not make this out to be a huge injustice...it had to be done. nobody can honestly tell me after listening to one of eskin's shows that he produces good radio. his knowledge is sorely lacking, his opinions are based on his agendas with the teams in town, his interaction with the callers is tired and stale, and to say his relationship on-air with Ike Reese is cold is an understatement. not to mention that he's alienated other hosts on the station.

i am looking forward to seeing who howard's replacement is and that maybe sports radio in philadelphia is finally on the road to recovery. it is long overdue.

My guess Anthony G..gets the shift...Ike removed after football season.

“After Sept. 2 I will be giving up the 3 to 7 p.m. shift but will still continue as part of WIP as part of the Eagles broadcast, as part of the pre-game shows and other broadcasts. Let me be clear I am staying at WIP but after close to 6000 sports shows I really thought it was time,” Eskin said

Bolded part makes it sound like Eagles broadcasts will be a production of "WIP" this season. Hmmm.

I agree. I think this is the first, although somewhat cryptic affirmation that WIP may be moving to the FM. It may sound a bit ludicrous, but it wouldn't shock me if Howard did his last WIP-AM show on Sept. 2nd and was on WIP-FM Sept. 12th, doing a 3-7 show...

Having dealt with Eskin back in the bad old days of the WIP/WSKR simulcast in 1991-2 let me just say it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Took 20 years but karma is a bitch, Howard.

... and somewhere, Mike Missanelli is drooling... (Anyone know if he commented about this on his show yesterday?)

By the way, anyone else find the irony of this "King" announcement going down on or around the anniversary of the passing of another "King" (Elvis Presley)?

I think it's Gargano and Reese @ 3-7 Jody Mac and Glen MacNow mid-day. Gargano and Reese have extremely good repoire. When Jody Mac came back 2 weeks ago, he only said he was filling in from time to time for a while.

and to the guy that said Eskin wasn't hard working, that's not true. I don't particularly like Eskin, but his info was always legit. You don't get that w/o working hard. That said, he probably burned out 6-7+ years ago.

It's not even close to fitting the definition of irony.

And worried about only by those with too much time on their hands. :)
