Yeah, I recall Cox flipping an oldies station in Birmingham to country even though the market was saturated with the format. I sincerely hope that would not happen here. This would not serve the public well but then it's usually not about the listener.
What kind of signal does 106.5 have and where can the station be heard? If it's a decent signal, I would think they would want to venture into something else and not country. But who knows?
For a long time, I've commented that I thought it would be in Cox Radio's best interest to introduce the "Coast" format (Hot AC) to Jax. I still think that. Some time ago, I thought they were wasting their time, in Miami for example, going after the long-established AC. Well boys and girls, Miami's Coast is a force to reckon with and they have made solid inroads.
WEJZ is no WLYF (the Miami AC) and so I think opportunity is there. What's interesting about the Coast format, at least in Miami is that they get into a lot of 80s particularly over the weekends. If the Point is left as is, I think there would be room for the two stations as there would still be differences in the overall sound with the Point being more retro alternative. At least something is about to happen in this market.
I might as well take this opportunity to send out congrats to Renda's Gator Country. During the last trend (Sp P1) I said they showed moderate gains but moderate was not a correct word to use. They are trending better and better and for a new station, that's pretty impressive. Whatever they are doing, they are making favorable impression on the listener to get diary mentions. At least Renda has one bright spot in Jax.
