Rumor in Haiku

Clear it is not though
One does not gather troops for
Cocktails at day's end.

Old May remember
That September 1992 was
Marked by station new.

The information
Might be wrong or could be right
Find out Thursday night.

My apologies. Rather than just spell it out and be boring, I figured I would dust off my high school creative writing skills.

The scuttlebutt I heard was that one cluster is holding a all-hands meeting Thursday afternoon. The folks there have fervently denied anything other than a meet the sister-company folks on the beginning of the JSA. As one knows, a close-of-business all-hands meeting can mean a quick pull the plug and switch formats.... that's how it went down in 1992 when Fox 102 suddenly got another competitor.

Take it for what it is: speculation and conjecture. True or not, it would wake up a sleepy summer.

We'll see what Thursday brings. Not sure anyone else in town is really worried about it, given the track record of the particular stations involved... ::)

I cannot engage in the poetic fun, though I admire it. But I can ask the question. How is Double O staying afloat in these times? They can't be billing enough to stay alive. The rent on that building alone, being right in the Vista, must be extraordinary. I know they had some money behind them. But at some point, they have to punt. Does anyone know how their other properties are doing in other markets?

Also, does anyone believe all the cutting is done in the other Columbia clusters?

Here's where Double O is now: Pilot Group is the money behind both Double O and Barrington Broadcasting. Barrington entered into a JSA with Double O to handle sales for the Coumbia stations. Hence, why you see New 92 all over WACH 57.

I hate to say it, I don't think the cutting is done. The next shoe to fall will be Citadel deciding that the mother ship must have even more profits from the Cash-cow Columbia cluster. I'm not sure if Clear Channel has anyone else to cut, but conceivably they could go totally "Premium Choice" and also consolidate all back-office functions in Charlotte or DC.

Citadel is rumored to be trying to sell some of their clusters. But only the ones not making money. They may even try to move the majors that they got in the ABC deal. So, that actually may save jobs in markets like Columbia where they actually get good returns. If that doesn't work, there are people like Randy Michaels and the guy who used to own Citadel, Larry Wilson, who are getting ready to buy a bunch of stations cheap.
