RUMOR: NESN looking at doing a LMA with WEEI with buy option

I heard this from two separate sources and both think it could happen.

John Henry and Jeremy Jacobs have pulled out from buying the Boston Globe.

Now they are looking at the possibility of doing a LMA on 93.7 with a buy option and in turn brand the station and network NESN radio.

The Bruins have an option in their contract with CBS that IF NESN takes control of a radio signal the team is free to move.

That certainly puts the Celtics in limbo.

Unless NESN is going to pour serious money into establishing a top-tier talk lineup, and not just make it a place so Tom Caron and Jenny Dell can have daily shows, meh.

NESN lacks the management ability to operate a radio station. Its attempts to create programming other than gamers is a miserable failure, of the quality normally associated with public access TV, and its ability to find talent is suspect. You can't see chests on the radio, so the primary qualification for NESN hiring is irrelevant.

Why is it being atuomatically assumed that NESN would try to run things at WEEI without the cooperation and input of the current WEEI folks?

I can't imagine NESN would be foolish or arrogant enough to think they could....without any prior experience....start running a radio station from the word "GO".

I can't imagine Entercom would be interested in eliminating an FM from their cluster... one of their better FM signals. Can you realistically picture Entercom deciding to get rid of WEEI and stick around with the WAAF/WKAF simulcast, a dying AM talker, and an AM ESPN repeater? I can't.

Groups don't ordinarily piecemeal their clusters. At the same time, I don't see NESN buying the whole Entercom Boston cluster.

Then what about WVEI Worcester, WVEI-FM Westerly/Providence, and WWEI Easthampton/Springfield?

I'm skeptical about this one coming to fruition. It's possible, but it'd be a HUGE deal.

The RS have to be concerned about anyone's ability to pay--again-- what they got from EEI. I believe they have three more seasons to go getting the big $$$ but I'm not sure?

It's been addressed here before ... I imagine there's a good chance the Sox get the same $$ as before, possibly a little more.

For the first time in probably more than 20 years, you have two stations with full-market sticks (93.7, 98.5) willing to lay down the cash. Maybe a third if Greater decides to jump in (I don't see any reason why they would, no obvious fit and already two sports stations in town... to paraphrase Lou Gorman, "What would we do with the games?"). Other stations including 890/1440 wanted the Sox, but their signal was a joke in terms of getting a deal with a major pro franchise.

Also, TV rights are skyrocketing across MLB. I don't know for sure radio rights are, but that would dovetail with the trend.

You forgot WUFC 1510--not on FM (yet), at times not best signal but local content, two networks and your MEDIAS ROJAS de BOSTON!

NESN...that would be smart....NESN would have all there host branded thru radio like ESPN does with there radio network...wont get numbers...but...smart by NESN

I can. They wouldn't be the first...or last.

Running a radio station without any prior experience is dump, agreed.

Running a radio station relying on "the current WEEI folks" is flat-out moronic.

I can't see Entercom selling 93.7 unless they are cash-strapped, in which case all manner of things become possible, particularly if NESN has cash burning a hole in its pockets. Do you recall the deal Nassau tried to make with Entercom re: 99.5 a few years back?

Not only has John Henry pulled out of the Globe deal, he's also reportedly selling the Liverpool soccer (excuse me - football) team.

Upon further reflection.....I've had a change of heart about my comment in reply number 4. NESN just might be smug and self satisfied enough to think they can attempt branching out into radio.

That would certainly be one way to free up some cash....assuming Henry could get anything close to the roughly 300 Million Pounds Sterling he paid for it.

henry still wants to buy globe and land underneath it
