[Rumor] Pinks slips and format flips coming to biloxi

Little bird told me that Triad broadcastings biloxi cluster has been sold, and the new owers plan to give out plenty of pink slips between christmas and new years, with format flips coming Jan 1st as that is the date the new company takes over.

Just to save the out of market viewers some time, care to post a list of the Triad owned stations, along with current formats and chances that they will be involved in a format change?

Second question, what other markets does Triad have clusters in?

If true, this should come as no surprise. It's been rumored for the past few years that the Triad/Mississippi Media stations were for sale. My first inkling came back when they sold their Tallahassee cluster.

Triad currently owns stations in Fargo ND, Biloxi/Gulfport MS, Savannah GA/Hilton Head Island SC, Peoria IL, and Bluefield WV.

The $10,000,000 question is: "Who bought them?" CC is also in a downsizing mode and is already at or near the maximum number of FMs in the market. Dowdy? Perhaps Cumulus, as a complement to their Mobile cluster? (WBLX always shows up strong on the Coast.)

Or, would the cluster be broken up and "pieced out" among multiple new owners?

I can assure you, ANY radio station in the country is "Up for sale" at anytime for the right price, and I can also assure you that Triad will still be the owner after January 1st. And I can also state that many many radio groups will be downsizing further, not just Triad, into the new year with revenues EVERYWHERE being off, it's simple economics.

Also, if you were familiar with FCC ownership regulations, you would know that it would be impossible for CC or Dowdy to acquire the Triad group. Now head back to your rumormill! And Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I think Wayne is right. Jan 1st will come and Triad will still be in control here. However, there will be changes. Which station's slogan rhymes with "Jank"? As in Jank that format off the air and put Sports on it?
Also, look for 4 pink slips in programming department and 2 in the office.

BTW. That was a funny reference to Cumulus buying it. Cumulus ain't buying nothing. They can't pay for what they have. 2009 is going to be a nail biter for the pretty boys in ATL.

I hate cryptic posts. How am I supposed to figure it out when my mind is spinning and the computer screen is blurry?

Sports on FM? Who'd uh thunk of that? What's wrong with good ol' Hank?

What teams are big over there? Obviously the Saints come to mind... don't know who's carrying them now or what type of contract they're in. I guess Southern Miss would be popular and maybe LSU. Even though they're the state schools, Ol' Miss and Mississippi State are probably too far away to have much local interest With the current economic strains on management I wouldn't be surprised to see a sports station that was 100% satellite fed. Is that what Triad is doing with their AM over there now?

If the sports made an upgrade to FM, what would they (or you) do with the AM? Perhaps Spanish for the folks rebuilding the coast? Or better yet, give the AM to Wayne and let him automate a Blues/Zydeco format.

Poledo, thanks for the kind words...and ho ho ho everyone. I have one of the AM's, our 10kw WTNI http://www.1640wtni.com, an excellent News Talker (IMO), and home of Mississippi State Football. We cannot run Southern Miss (taken by another station), nor Saints or LSU (taken by 50kw WWL). And yes, 1490 is 24-hour ESPN. They are home of the Hornets and NFL football. Ratings come January 23rd and will say a lot.

Look for a fully satelitte fed sports station to replace Hank. The AMs are irrelevant. Don't grow too attached to anyone on the phone list with WTNI next to their name.

They ain't spending no money on programming, promoting, or people in 2009.

It is a waste of the signal, but it's the best band-aid in DB's medicine kit right now.

I'm assuming there's a whole lot of speculation going on here and no one is sharing solid inside information. I don't know much about WTNI, but WVMI was a big deal. Why give up to WBUV? Clear Channel hardly every wins a fight, just look at WRNO. Wouldn't it make more cents to put WTNI on FM and move the satellite sports to 1640? That would still leave 1490 free for someone at Triad to get creative with. One guy there already has RocknOldies.com that could easily and cheaply be retooled for OTA broadcast.

That's my feelings, too, Poledo. Guess we'll have to stay tuned. WTNI on 96.7 would make sense, and ESPN on the stronger signal would also make sense. They would probably run the NFL games on FM. I think the Rocknoldies internet is Wayne's on the side...I could see something like that on 1490 or Spanish...

The lil' rumor bird missed this one while paying the attention to Triad, Coast Group is slashing, next to go is WZNF (Z95) PD and morning man Sammy Lee/Snackbar. Sad. Happy New Year. Is a flip and a bird to come? Stay tuned...

Sorry to hear about Sammy Lee...damn, it's never easy. Yup, 1/1/09 is about over, and Triad still in control and all still employed. So much for Nose4news...must be stuffed up!

from Tom Taylor's Radio-Info.com News mailer 12/31...Clear Channel summons its GMs to a meeting in Dallas next Tuesday and Wednesday...Agenda? GMs aren’t being given one – just told when to show up. Budgets? They’ll probably be handed their station-specific and even employee-specific budgets on the spot. There won’t be the usual presentations and opportunity to defend their local decisions. Because – from what I hear, decisionmaking will be handled by corporate. The advance word is that San Antonio has crunched the statistics down to the lowest-possible level. High-priced talent which isn’t delivering what Bain/Lee and the Mays-family management have decided is an appropriate return on investment may not be around for long. The local managers may even be handed a list ranking all their employees in terms of effectiveness – and that may be a prelude to having corporate determine who’s staying for 2009 and who’s going. It’s standard business-school thinking – but rare in radio.

Wayne, you are correct. It's only beginning. Good luck to all in the biz as it looks like the New Year will be a rocky one for many.

I stand firm with my projections on Triad.
Hank is Yank
Sports from the Bird in its place.
Losing 3 or 4 programming people.
2 to 3 in the back office.
And GO may be GONE (in a different direction).
Hope you got plenty of copy paper left from 2008. There ain't no cash for any more.
This ain't Benny's bus no more. The bus company is calling the shots.
